Dinerman, that's the one.

Looks just like my cut when I leave it more dry. Although yours is a bit more buzzed in the back.

*edit* By the way, can I ask what you did to achieve the look in the picture? Anything special?

It doesn't have any kind of product in it. I use a boars bristle brush. Nothing special, really.

I personally use Black and White Pomade with Brylcreem on top of it. Great hold Great shine, but empty wallet. This stuff is made in Tennessee (or so the tub says) but the only place to get it is in the UK (so I import it). $15 for a 7oz tub+ $5-$10 s&h. But Ive been using it for 3 years and its all my hair will accept now.

As for haircuts, I just take a good picture of either elvis, james dean, or chris isaak in to my barber and tell him to cut it like that.

this is what my hair looks like dry:

and with the grease:

I was tired of going to Super Cuts so I started looking for a barber. My hair can't be "styled", I just need it short.
I phone a place and he says they don't take reservations; just come in and "by the way, we don't style". He wasn't rude just laying it down.
The shop had a red and white striped pole, boxing magazines, combs in blue liquid and two old guys cutting hair. I knew I'd found the right place.
The down side is the perfect barbers tend to die or retire.

The way to tell if it's the right barber for us is they have white hair and you can tell them you want a regular haircut. If they think you aren't sure they say "Do you want it blocked or tapered in back?" In my case I said tapered and his response was "Oh, a regular haircut." We had an understanding.

Four really good barbers had passed away since I began getting haircuts from artisans of male grooming. But alas, there was hope. As the barber I found now trims my hair just the way I want and for only $10. I wish I found him sooner since he's been cutting hair for over 40 years. Plus the fact that he takes a smoke break between customers, or at least takes a few puffs while you're sitting in the chair, isn't reassuring. I know there are laws, but he's the owner plus one helluva guy. But when children are present, he drinks coffee.

What I'd like is a 30's style cut that still looks good after wearing a motorcycle helmet. I guess bikers didn't wear helmets much in the 30's. Just high power Brillcream! (They must have picked up a few insectoid hitch-hikers though! )

I think I'm going to get my hair cut like this sometime in the next couple of days. Other than bringing the photo, what should I ask for?

Woah! I just accidentally cut my hair like this today!
I went up higher than I wanted to and wound up having to use a #1 all around. Looks cool though.

I would gladly drive up to Seattle for the treatment on a recommendation! Let me know where this place is!

There is another one I found in Ballard. One chair, men-only barber shop, complete with vintage decor and men's magazines. I've been to him a couple times now, and he does a good job.
He mentioned his age once, 75, so I hope he's going to be around for a while. Friendly, upbeat guy, lives in Monroe and drives a Harley to his shop.

Here is an assortment of classic haircuts from 1949, collected from one of my favorite films, The Man Who Wasn't There:

"The Butch"

"The Flat Top"

"The Ivy"

"The Vanguard"

"The Crew"

"The Junior Contour"

"The Executive Contour"

Along with the hair styles and detailed reconstruction of a 40's barber shop, this film is rich in period detail and presents a highly unique, twisting plot. I, myself, sport the Ivy cut. :)

Junior Contour! That's what I want! So do I just go to my barber and tell him to give me the Junior Contour?

On a serious note, if you come across photographs of this style or something similar to it, could you pass it along so that I can take them with me to the barber?

I used to get my hair cut like that a lot.

Who is he?

Someone posted a picture of this guy a while ago- I think it was an australian hat shop? I can't really remember, but I cropped it down just to show the person with the hair I want. No one famous.

Here's what I came back from the barber's with. Not quite what's in the picture I gave him, but I think he did a nice job on it, looks the part.
