H?ºckel Hats

Hi,

Hmm, I like vintage hats some, but it looks like this is a vintage Fedora Lounge THREAD! lol

Anyway, I just wanted to say, Brinybay, that there are *three* Burlington Coat Factory outlets within a reasonable distance of downtown Seattle. Not just whichever one you've visited.

The best selection of decent hats (meaning, they often have Hückels and other hats made with fur felt or fur-wool blends) can be found just north of the Snohomish County line on Aurora Ave.

The downside of this place is that they plug their hats with anti-theft gizmos which leave a visible mark with a visible pinhole at the center. You'll have to work the scars over to make them disappear. Annoying to have to do it, but at least it does work. I bought a peach-colored Hückel fedora there, but have so far been too lazy to make the plug scar completely disappear.

Then there's a BCF in Auburn and one in the Tacoma area. No anti-theft plugs that I noticed at either place (yay!), but also no hats I found in my size worth buying (boo!).

As for online, there's Bencraft in Brooklyn and there's MileChai in Denver. I don't know what Hückels you can get at Bencraft. At MileChai, their very wide-brimmed black Villavacencio sells for $140. It's got a sorta-rabbinical/sorta-Lamont Cranston look about it. In some ways, it's similar to an Akubra Federation Deluxe, but with softer felt and a wider brim. I wear mine fairly often.

Actually, I wear both the Villavacencio and a Fed Deluxe, which I've hand-styled to look almost the same, fairly often. It's not likely that the huddled masses of the hatless where I work have the first clue that I've got "fraternal twin" hats.

The Huckel wharehouse is actualy 2 minutes from one of our stores. The problem is that becaue of the Euro ,even Tonack (Huckel) hats will be going up in price. Use to be that one could get hats at a decent price, but no more .

You must be talking about the BCF up by Aurora Village. That's the one I was referring to. I've complained about those security plugs both here and to BCF. Somebody here said to wet the hole with a drop or two of water and let it dry.

Last I was in there they seemed to be stocking up on "summer" hats, lot of straw fedoras. We're having a hard time letting go of winter to get to spring, let alone summer, haha!

I was aware of the one in Tacoma, but not Auburn. Both aren't really worth the trip for me, (I'm in Greenwood) but I will be in Tacoma first weekend in May for a scuba expo, I'll check it out then if it's not too far off the beaten path.

I didn't find any Huckels in any BCF this year. I went to several in several states hoping to find a couple more as I like the one I have.

They replaced the Huckel with a Steve Harvey line of clothing and hats. The Steve Harvey hats do not appear to me to be as good as the Huckel. In fact almost every Steve Harvey hat I saw was wool.

It have one very much like yours, BUD, from BCF. Olive colored though, and a less pronounced snap to the brim. Nice hat going on about eight years of semi-active wear. HOWEVER... I'm posting here because I just want to read "honey hole" about three or five more times. That is, without a doubt, the FILTHIEST thing I've read on this forum! lol

LOL Kiltie, I am not sure of the origin of "honey hole", but it was a term that was used back in the days that I fished the B A S S Tournament Trail in the 80's

I don´t think there is a sound in english for the "umlaut U" from german. Maybe it can be transcribed like [hikl], but the is pronounced a bit harder, closer to [u:]

My everyday hat is a medium grey Huckel fedora. I would say it had a medium brim. I believe it is felt, with a nice clean "snap" to the brim.

I got it at a country department store for $66 about 4-5 years ago, probably about $100 in the city store.

I wear it to work and out and about. In fact it is the one I intend to be buried in as in this thread http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=48376&page=4

The Swiss can do that kind of sound pretty well - and they do it frequently, all the time. There you have a whole language that was built entirely on the effects of a rather severe case of laryngitis.

The 'ü' sounds a little like the 'e' in 'hew'. The umlaut was originally a letter 'e' and represents 'ue'.

If you think that is hard to pronounce, try the name of the Icelandic volcano that's stopping my new hat from arriving fom the States right now: eyjafjallajökull.
