I thought about it, but for the small balance required it would be crazy to let pass. Lawless on the other hand.....lots of spare time at the moment. Got myself a cool new hobby. Sleep in until 10am and then just walk into strangers houses and take TVs and iPads etc..it's a really fun tax free past time.... I actually think that particular sport was invented in Glasgow? I might be wrong, but I saw train spotting again last week and it did seem like a national sport..

Hi guys, just chasing a bit of advice that I'm sure is buried somewhere in the Gustin thread. I have a pair of the japanese classics or whatever they are called. They have been sitting brand new in my cupboard for 6 months. On the inside tag it says raw. Are these the ones that should be soaked before wearing? I've worn them on my motorbike the last couple of days for about 3 hours total.
I screwed up with the Americans by gustin, I washed them after 4-5 wears. They have now been washed half a dozen times. I'm wondering. If because I've washed them early, will they ever get the highly sought after fading etc, or did I miss the window of opportunity to be cool?
Any advice is appreciated. I want to manage the Japan's properly and see what result I get.

All Gustin jeans state RAW on the tag.
I think there have only been three "unsanforized" offerings, the American Unsanforized, the Loomstate, and the Black Loomstate.

So here has been my experience, for what it's worth. I washed almost every pair of Gustins as soon as I got them in a cold gentle wash in a front-loading washer. Then I put them in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes to warm them up, then I hung them to dry. About all I noticed was maybe 3/4" inseam shrinkage (I was measuring them before and after). I had a few that ended up with the "dryer fades". You know, where they get wrinkled and then you end up with the weird creasing in them that never seems to go completely away.

I washed them to get rid of the starch and any loose indigo. The jeans still seem to get "sick fades, brah". In fact, my Unbranded 21oz jeans have been washed many times and they still are getting excellent fading.

So I had a few pairs of Gustins that were a little loose, and decided to conduct an experiment. I soaked them in HOT water for an hour or two. The hottest I could put my hands in to swish them around. The Indigo ones did turn the water blue. The blacks and greys didn't really do anything to the water (which is what I expected since the black and grey dyes are different than indigo). I then tossed them in the dryer on medium-high heat until they were DRY. You know what, they shrank about 1" in length, and 1/2" in the waist. Much less than expected, but they are Sanforized, so I guess they really shouldn't shrink.

But here's the interesting part, no "dryer fades"! It appears that it's the spin cycle in the washing machine which imparts the unwanted wrinkles to the denim. The other interesting thing was the jeans came out soft and fluffy, if you could call it that. Zero starchiness. The big downside, they are so soft, that I don't think they will ever get any strong creasing to impart the fade lines most people want. This is fine for non-indigo denim since it doesn't really fade the same anyway.

I just wanted to post up my experience.

Useful stuff, Andy. Managed to get the buttons replaced on my Ub21s. I've resisted washing them too much - I think I lost a bit of length on the leg during the first wash, though they're still very wearable, so I don't fancy doing it too often. The fades are still quite prominent on the ridges of the creases, and the jeans are pretty soft now.

Very interesing and informative post andy b. Thus far I have worn my new Gustins for a few days and then soaked in very hot water in the tub for 30 minutes, then washed in a front loader with minimal detergent, and finally my front loader dryer on high heat but not until completely dry. Then placing on a hanger to dry for another 24-48 hours, all to get about 1" shrinkage in the inseam and a bit less in the waist. Since my desirable inseam is ~35" (I have long legs), this protocol has worked well for all of my Gustin jeans. Subsequent washes are in cold water but no dryer, and then allowed to air dry on hanger.

I guess they have to look at new lines, but that slab of pointlessness shouldn't have made it off the design board. I use the word 'design' in the broadest sense, btw... It's when I see stuff like that, that I remember why I've moved away from Gustin. Would take a lot for me to come back to them.

Yeah, that brand really has wandered far from its roots. I suppose there's a limit to the number of jeans even hard core fans will buy. [huh]

I continue to be of the opinion that their Zimbabwe and Okayama jeans are the best of the best, particularly at their price point.

I agree that my Zimbies are my favorite Denim fabric, but the cut ain't so great....I've sold all but 3 pair of my Gustins.
All my currents were bought second hand for a discount!

it's not really surprising though is it? I mean, they sell clothing and shoes are a by-product of that. I can hardly blame them for it even if I think their current shoe offering is horrendous. I'm sure if Gustin did an Alden collab everyone would jizz themselves
