Just an observation:
There are talk about guns in the Golden Era, and in the WWII section naturally.
There are even more guns in the Display case and there are f...... guns in the General Attire.:eusa_doh:
Are you all so obsessed with guns, that you've got to have them all over. (Have not been in the Powder Room yet...guesse they are there too.)

Year, year - I know its just like the TV. If you don't like it, you don't have to see it. But I just find it slightly alarming that guns, shooting and the obsession with guns can take up SO much space. But maybe I am the only one...sorry.:(

I think that this is the best advice of all...if the posts about firearms disturb or offend you, avoid them. There are lots of posts about lots of things on the Lounge...many of them redundant (read: "What's your take on tattoos?") Some folks like ties, some like A-2 leather jackets, some like to talk about guns.

Clicking on a thread is a choice...personally, I've learned a lot about an area that interests me by participating/reading these posts. I hope that we can all continue to discuss a variety of things that interest us in the polite and tolerant way that has come to define us as a group. ;)

Americans love guns, it's an important part of our culture. In fact it's a life long passionate intrest of mine, so much so I've made a living making guns for the past eleven years. I'm sure it seem strange to Europeans.
Don't compare gunownweship with what you see on TV. Gangsters and Hoodlums are a very small % of gun owners in America, but they get all the press.

By that same token, I did not see the Original Poster expressing anything but personal opinion about it....an observation if you will.

So rather then merely stating that he doesn't have to read....perhaps thinking about what he said could also be an effective use of time.

He knows he doesn't have to click, so telling him that again......

He was to some extent making a social commentary on the issue, and so far...the responses have been 'tough, don't read it'

Yes, there does seem to be a bit more gun topics lately Spitfire. I suspect that it's a much more popular interest here in the States then in some other places. We take our -right- to have a gun really darnned seriously overall. That explains a lot of the interest right there.

Cordially,

Denise

Since I've been here, I've only seen about 3-5 threads on guns. It seems to me, just like any large discussion board, that if a topic is of any interest to its members it will be discussed.

I don't see how discussing guns is any different than discussing straight razors. Guns are a pretty integral part of the golden era, from gangsters, to the war, to hunting, etc. Even Looney Tunes from the '30's-50's had its share of guns.

I'm sure the topic will run its course much like all the other topics on here. Apparently, this particular topic just hit a vein and we're having a nice jaw wagging.

And btw, I think someone already mentioned somewhere else that the topic of guns (including pictures, etc) is more or less recycled from previous threads. So...[huh]

...and I responded by making a social commentary that the easiest way to avoid those things in life that offend you is to avoid those things in life that offend you. Simple, yet effective.

Which would be a valid point...if he was feeling mortally offended. But he sure didn't sound like that to me.....mildly concerned and interested in -why-...

But of course..its easier to just knee jerk reaction and tell everyone not to notice or have opinions or wonder why or be concerned.....then it is to ponder the actual comments made.

Really? And I was always chalking it up to brilliant men like Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin. I guess who needs smarts as long as you got a rod?
I've noticed in the past 30 years or so that pro gunownership is mainly a rural thing. Many of the residents of the big cities on both coasts aren't that crazy about guns, infact they are leary of any gun ownership. Citizens of Chicago and other urban areas are even voting to have themselves disarmed by passing "no gun ordanances".
I've also noted that the main ownership of guns in the big cities happens to be Gangsters , Thugs and Outlaws.
Just a cultural observation on my part. No judgements are intended.;)

Right. Which is why I based my prior comment based on the old stereotype that Americans are obsessed with guns. :)

I disagree...to suggest that it is "alarming" that any topic of interest to others on the Lounge "can take up SO much space" is asking for a backlash from those of us who participate in those discussions. The very nature of this thread invites disagreement - even going so far as to referring to "f...... guns" and asking if those of us who participate in those discussions are "so obsessed with guns, that you've got to have them all over."

I read Spitfire's comments (and yours) and must have missed the part where he asked WHY there are so many posts about guns. He clearly expresses his disdain for the topic.

Funny that you should bring up the topic of knee jerk reaction...

So was sex. We don't talk that much about it around here, though.

You're correct that it was essential. So go ahead and create a thread about it.

As I wrote in the last gun thread, I'm neither for nor against disarmament. As with pornography, I just don't understand the fascination people have with them. Then again, I don't understand anyone's obsession with soap operas, rap music, ring-tones...

Hey, I'm still trying to figure out why guys are so crazy about sports, or cars, or vintage clothes...guess to each their own. [huh]
