PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model.

But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the animal is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture.

I would say that it is spot on about winter continuing. We are getting more snow in DC. This has been the snowiest year in quite a while.

Maybe six more weeks of rainy winter weather will raise Nacimiento Lake up to a normal level instead of the piddly 31% it's at now. The last rains raised the lake 24 feet & brought it up to that 31%. So, bring on the rain Phil, I welcome it.

Cheers!

And when asked to bring on their animatronic groundhogs, I'm sure both groups had to admit they didn't have one, this was all to gain themselves more publicity, and they didn't think anyone would ever call their bluff. Or words to that effect... [/cynicism] ;)

On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
Recently rented the movie...

On blue ray and watched it on my new big flat screen. Very, very, very good film. Bill Murray is perfect and Andie's still my secret crush. Watching it on "the big screen" again was a real treat. (Even Helen laughed her poppka off!)

I don’t mean to sound righteous, but I think there must be a money trail somewhere in order for PETA to get their articles published at all. It’s one thing to blow the whistle on animal abuse, or real mistreatment, but to take every single opportunity to blow a horn about animals being “exploited” in every possible situation is, in my humble opinion, a little excessive.

PETA doesn’t like circuses, ground hog day, zoos, slaughterhouses, omnivorous activity, etc. and at some point I believe PETA would prefer human beings to live like (civilized) animals eating grains, drinking water and having fully synthetic/organic clothes.

I’m not being facetious, I just believe that’s simply an extreme point of view that seems to get quite a bit of (undeserved) media attention. I suppose that’s the sensation media outlets look for so they can sell their online subscriptions and advertising, but unfortunately, I don’t think it really forwards PETAs actual cause anymore than Islamist zealots justify their cause by blowing up an airplane.

I believe there is a disproportionate ratio of human animals living in squalor and misery than there are wild/domestic animals, and perhaps PETA should consider the ethical treatment of said animals before furthering a cause (Groundhog Day) with such an utter lack of urgency. Just my two cents.

Wouldn't that be the T-800G (G for groundhog) series?

Seems to me like environmental groups and animal activists are using the same spin guys that used to tell us that smoking was good for you.

Don't get me wrong as I care about this stuff, but there's going to be a backlash when they keep on engaging in cheap stunts (robot phil, really) and sloppy science.

Rant over:)
