Hey everyone! I’ve been lurking here for a bit and finally decided to sign up. I’m a big fan of heritage style clothing especially leather jackets. I love reading about the different hides, linings, and construction methods people discuss in this forum.

So far, my collection is small just a Schott Perfecto and a vintage café racer I found on eBay but I’m hoping to learn more from you all and maybe add a few more timeless pieces. I’m also really interested in how everyone cares for their jackets to keep them looking great over the years.

I’m curious what’s your favorite everyday leather jacket? any go-to tips for breaking one in or keeping it in top shape?

Looking forward to diving deeper into the discussions here and getting to know fellow enthusiasts!

Top tip for breaking in a leather jacket:
get yourself a good one and then get the heck off this site.

That way you'll actually wear it. ;)

If you stay on this site, you're going to end up with ten jackets in rotation and they won't get worn enough to break in.

I'm learning this the hard way.

Luckily I can't afford any more right now (not that that ever stopped me...)

any go-to tips for breaking one in

Welcome.

As mentioned, the break-in is determined by how much time you spend in the jacket. So, if you care about breaking it in as fast as possible, just keep wearing it even if you're at home.

If the sleeves are thick, maybe rubbing some water over them and moving your arms around can help soften them.

But it's like 80/20 rule - Time spent in the jacket is the biggest bang for your buck.

If things are desperate, maybe consider this:

Get a nice container of tallow. Best conditioner in the world. https://epicprovisions.com/products/beef-tallow-animal-oil-single-jar?bvstate=pg:3/ct:r

Tallow is coming back and prices are getting ridiculous. I purchased two containers for about 6.99 two years ago. Now they are double. Some high-end Vegas Hotels are using the old method of presenting the finished beef on the plate. My old method was to collect some for free from my local shop. However, those free things are long gone. If you're interested in my conditioning cream formula, I posted in this site. Sharing it because it works, It is a formula mainly borrowed from an old timer leather expert from Guanajuato.
