Greatcoats?

I see greatcoats on surplus stores occasionally. Are they more formal or casual? I usually wear cords, an OCBD, and a sweater but would like a nice long coat. Barn coats aren’t doing it for me these days.

I have several and no longer wear them, in part because wool isn't as warm as insulated coats, in part because they look a bit too "military." They're neither formal nor casual, they're military. Just get a nice civilian overcoat or good quality trench coat or single-breasted raincoat (with wool liner).
