I believe most of favorites have already been listed but I'll go ahead and mention a recent film; King Kong. I can't say I remember note for note, but it was the background music when they were on the ice in Central Park.

I love the John Barry scores for the 007 movies. He also did the scores for Zulu & Dancing With Wolves.
Henry Mancini's score for Wait Untill Dark has some great micro-tonal sections. Very spooky/creepy.
The movie Casino has a great "various artists" soundtrack.
Gato Barbieri's score for Last Tango In Paris.
Ry Cooder has scored some good ones.
I was always a fan of Lalo Schifrin's theme song for the tv show Mannix.

Quincy Jones!

Carlisle Blues, yes, that was the movie I was thinking about, thank you!
Nathan Dodge, I will listen to the Lalo Schifrin sound samples that you suggested. :)

Another composer, arranger, musician, producer, in one word genius, that I greatly admire is Quincy Jones , I like almost everything he wrote for movies and TV, including the music for the film "The Color Purple" as mentioned above!

I get hopelessly lost in Dr. Zhivago's romanticism, mysticism and duality when hear or play "Somewhere My Love"(Lara's Theme) by Maurice Jarre

The film score from "Total Recall" is outstanding.

The background music in the early Bond films are stunning especialy those underwater thems for Thunderball!

Some of the songs from the film "The Jackel" are great especially 'Red Tape' just steams. Same with the first tomb Raider has some great cuts.

There is a CD called Crime Jazz that has a lot of flim noirish and fifties crime drama themes.

The Beau Hunks doing the Little Rascals music on two cds is exceptional, simply mesmerizing.

The Miami Vice soundtrack cd's have some of the themes from the show that are great to reminise to.

HOUR OF THE GUN- Jerry Goldsmith. One of my favorite scores ever and I've been listening to it a lot lately after a couple of years away from it. Still as fresh as the first time I heard it, and it works so well with the film--which is the purpose, first and foremost, right?

No one married images and music better than Jerry Goldsmith. He was also wise enough NOT to score a scene when silence was more effective. Best example: the original PLANET OF THE APES. BTW, Goldsmith conducted that score wearing an ape mask! Ahh, the sixties...lol

Risky Business by Tangerine Dream
Blade Runner by Vangelis
Taxi Driver - Bernard Hermann
The Warriors - Barry De Vorzon
And the score to Le Samourai - Just saw it and wow, great French new wave flick.
Many more.

I love the work Howard Shore did with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I'm excited to see what he has in store for us with The Hobbit, that is, if he scores it. He did remark that during the filming of LOTR, that he was quietly working on music for the Hobbit, and had some pieces he was really proud of.

Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner are two favorites that have been mentioned before.

I'm a big fan of Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Rozsa, and those have all been mentioned already. One composer I haven't seen yet is Frank De Vol. He scored quite a lot of films, and his music for The Flight of the Phoenix and The Dirty Dozen and Cat Ballou rank very high on my list of favorite scores.

Don't think anyone's mentioned the "other" Jerry, Jerry Fielding. Best known for his scores for The Wild Bunch and The Outlaw Josey Wales, he's also the only composer besides Lalo Schifrin to have scored a Dirty Harry movie (The Enforcer). He specialized in edgy, avante-garde sounds but could bring out the funk out at the drop of a hat. He's not even very popular among most film score buffs as he's an acquired taste; when I'm in that mood, he's the composer for me.

For our retro/WWII purposes, you may know that Fielding composed the theme to Hogan's Heroes. More amusingly, he created the "Tribble" motif for Star Trek!

Another thing I love about Frank DeVol is that he portrayed "Happy Kine" of Happy Kine and The Mirthmakers...the house band on the late night tv talk show parody "Fernwood Tonight" in the '70s.
I also Have an Ella Fitzgerald lp on which he provides the music and arrangements.

Clint Mansell is one of my favorite film composers going now. I love his work with Mogwai for that score.
I also love his score Requiem for a Dream!

French composer Eric Sera is another fave of mine. 5th Element, The Professional I listen to often.

Im surprised no one has mentioned Thomas Newman's work, Shawshank Redemption, that score is perfect!

Im really into Terence Blanchard's Inside Man. There are some wonderful passages in that score.

Graeme Revell is another fave. He does a lot of stuff but some of my faves are The Insider, The Negotiator and The Crow.

:)

Thomas Newman is one of the few composers working today who has their very own style, his score for ROAD TO PERDITION is a masterwork. I love the silence between the notes (as Miles Davis might have said) of his piano work.

Not vintage, but I thought Carlo Silioto did a heckuva job on The Punisher. Just the right blend of dark, moody and "things in motion" vibe to musically "describe" Frank Castle and what he was going through.

*cringing at anticipated reactions if I bring up David Arnold's scoring on Independence Day*
