This is absolutely fantastic--a true Grail item!
It's hard to know where to start to describe this jacket, there's so much to say about it! I'll start with the tailoring, and then move to the wonderful and rare tweed from which this is cut!
This was tailored by W,P. Hine & Co., of 52 High Street, Oxford, likely during the early 1950s. The tailoring is immaculate--as you would expect from one of the most respected bespoke tailors of Oxford.
It is cut as a classic English hacking jacket, with a three button front, high lapels, and slanted hacking pockets, including a smaller hacking ticket pocket on the right-hand side. All of the pockets are beautifully tailored, with elegantly curving pocket flaps which feature lapped seams. They are all hand-tailored. Beautiful!
The rest of the jacket is just as beautifully tailored as the pockets. The side seams are elegantly curved to give the jacket a beautiful silhouette, and the collar appears hand-sewn. The collar also hides a fully functional throat latch, designed to protect your neck in inclement weather. This, too, is hand-tailored.
The jacket is fully lined, and features a single center vent. It also features single button cuffs--traditional for British country jackets.
This jacket is cut from traditional Keeper's tweed. Keeper's tweed was originally designed in the C19th for the outer clothes of the gamekeepers employed by sporting estates: It is thick, sturdy, HEAVY tweed in a twill weave, designed to serve as protection against anything the British countryside could throw at it, from briars to rain to animal bites.
Keeper's tweed is now very rare indeed--I believe the only place in England that still stocks a full range of jackets in Keeper's Tweed is Cording's of Piccadilly. That's not surprising--this is a HEAVY sturdy tweed, a far cry from the lighter tweeds that are common today. This tweed makes even mid-century Harris tweed look flimsy!
To give you an idea of how robust this tweed is, this jacket weighs in at little over 3lbs... Roughly double the weight of a contemporary jacket.
Keeper's tweed is traditionally a solid dark colour--dark brown or charcoal being standard. This jacket is dark charcoal.
Although this was tailored in the 1950s, it is in immaculate condition--I suspect it has never been worn. And because it's Keeper's tweed it is still as sturdy and robust as the day it was made, likely prior to the coronation of Elizabeth II. This is ready to last you for the rest of your life, and be passed down to your heirs!
It was, of course, Made in England--in Oxford.
