For all said and done, it's nice to see that there are ebay sellers out there that are honest and trying to run a good business. Around campus I once met a guy that said he sold broken computer processors that were bad as "untested as is" merchandise, just because he needed to get rid of them. I was pretty appalled at his nonchalante dishonesty. You got a bummer of a hat, but at least the seller tried to do right, and that's still good.

Dating the hat

I think Stetson went to full size tags (7 1/4 as opposed to 1/4) in the 50s, well before it sold out. This hat looks to me like a 60s hat, black sweat, sweatband tie with little knots in it.

I think you did the right thing to return it. I doubt the seller meant to misrepresnt it, but that isn't the point. The description was not accurate. Sounds like a good seller.
