My friends just got back from Austrailia. Before they left, they asked, "What was that hat you said everybody was going crazy over?" I replied, "The Federation Deluxe." Their next statement was, "We want to get you one as a GIFT. What size, and color do you want?" I tried to beg off, but they insisted. So, I said, "Size 57 in any color." As soon as they left, somebody mentioned, here in the Lounge, that there is only one shop that carries that hat. They were not about to give up. I just learned they researched it on line, before they left. When they got there, they phoned to reserve one of the two 57's in stock. Then they drove two hundred kilometers to get there. It came back on the plane as carry on luggage! I do believe this is my most treasured hat.

Do you think those friends of yours might consider adoption?
Very nice of them, JT. You look darned good in it. The Federation is a large lid and, to my eye, it looks best on men with large, strong features. You and that hat lend each other a certain gravitas.

A lovely story and a fanstastic hat!

And especially friends that know how much a good hat means.

Vintage black fedora's with the high crown and wide brim are really hard to find, yours shows that the federation in black is an excellent alternative. It looks really good.

Thank-you for all the compliments on the hat and the tie. The tie has its own story. Six months ago, my wife bought it for me in New Orleans. That night we heard a band with a trumpet player who was way beyond good. He was wearing a tie almost like mine. When the set was over, I talked Jamil Shariff into autographing the back of that new tie.

Thanks Jamil!

Absolutely gorgeous

I saw this image and instead of waiting for Hats Direct to get new stock in Tawny Fawn in my size, changed my order to the Black Federation (not deluxe). I had been thinking I wanted a black CEO, but this picture changed my mind.

Barb, keep in mind that the Federation has a different style of brim than the CEO, the federation has a regular snap brim whereas the CEO is flatter and is shaped to be a downturned brim. Just so you know.

Similar to my Tilley Hats

So I figured the snap brim would look good on me. BTW, what hat is in your avatar?

Barb, I think the snap brim will look great on you too, great choice. The hat in my Avatar is a custom made fedora from Optimo who are located in Chicago. It is in what is called London Gray, kind of a gunmetal gray, it has a dimensionally cut brim, it's 2 5/8ths on the sides and 2 3/4ths front and back.

Did you bash it yourself?

Figuring out colors is tough because in photography, light changes everything.

Barb, Yes, I creased it myself. It just took a couple of minutes. I did it dry. Went with a center crease with front pinch and side dents (Indiana Jones). Don't let the idea scare you. It is fairly easy, and easy enough to change, if you want. Creased in felt is not the same as "carved in stone."
