There is a certain parity with gambling and the goodwill type stores. Just as there are people that are more lucky than others at the casino there are those that are more lucky at goodwill, Salvation Army, flea markets, yard sales and the like. There are people that have the deal finding them instead of vice a versa.

Dear Fedora Loungers,

I have been going to the Salvation Army a number of times recently, and CHRIST THE LORD has Blessed me with many opportunities to buy nice items made in the U.S.A.

From a suit, to a blazer with a 1949 union tag, and others (I plan on posting pics), I have been pleased and also disappointed over two items that I left and came back days later to buy but someone else already got them.

Monday I picked up some nice items to wear bowling tonight, including a fine pair of McGregor trousers which I also have a woal overcoat from the same company. I read the directions on the tag -machine wash warm- and threw it into the washer with a pair of khakis I picked up as well. Unfortunately, whenever I pulled it out, the tag had pretty much washed away with just now a barely visible McGregor brand-name on the end of it.

Has anyone else had this problem occur to them?

There is a certain parity with gambling and the goodwill type stores. The difference with goodwill shopping is that your value increases over time, not decreases as in gambling. The key to increasing your luck is persistence

Sometimes it comes down to luck. Had a good day at the local Goodwill yesterday. I have left empty handed many times. Yesterday was different.

SB 3B Hugo Boss super 100's in light brown
DB 6B Dormeuil lightweight wool/silk in light grey
Black Loake wingtips
Black Florsheim Imperials (chisel toe, but I'll live with 'em for work)
Eight cotton business shirts
Casual shirts, Izod, Gant, Pringle, etc.

Haven't had a haul like this in a while. Buying a lottery ticket today.

One definition of luck is when opportunity meets preparedness. If you're going to buy the wrong stuff and learn from your mistakes Goodwill and the like are the place since you don't pay a ton of money.

Gambling, including the lottery, is for dupes.

Unless you county the gas, you're not out anything when you goose-egg at the local thrift shop.
The only ways it works is the same today as it was 35 years ago. You just show up over and over and eventually you get lucky, if you want to call it that.
The discipline is to tuck that 20 or 50 or whatever in the back of the wallet so it's there when the hat, coat, inlaid peewee cowboy boots, whatever, shows up.

Unfortunately, as has been suggested before, the challenge for too many of us today is one of girth, rather than luck.
If we would lose several pounds there would be more vintage stuff that we could make use of ... speaking for myself at least.

I got a sharkskin fleck suit from the 50s $20 at a local thrift shop. Suit fit me perfect no tailoring needed. Its grey with atomic flecks and is a wool silk blend.

That's when you are in the right place at the right time. I know a number of guys that have had the good fortune to pick up something that is a perfect fit.

A touch of obsessive compulsive doesn't hurt. I stop by the local shops a few times a week, and it pays off.
Yesterday, 3 pair of Bill,s Khakis,M1 chamois,M2&M2P twill, like new, perfect fit, $4.33 a pair including tax.
Worth every penny and a huge thrill to boot.
I don't get that kind of rush walking into Macy's and buying pants.

We have tons of thrift stores in my area. While not from Goodwill (they came from a CHKD thrift), I recently picked up two vintage Oshkosh suitcases in excellent condition and a vintage Samsonite train case. All three for under $20!

I think that the term Goodwill has a non-specific thrift store meaning for some regions.
Like in some regions Coke doesn't mean Coca Cola it is a general term for all types of soda / pop.

Very true! In my area we have CHKD, Goodwill, and Salvation Army, plus tons of independently owned thrifts and we call them all Goodwill!
