We have a process that not only protects the actual account holder, but also precludes posting by the probable scammer. I'm not going into details about the process, but I will tell you that it has been started.

When did the process start? This account was flagged as posting scams in early February. They changed their name, and continued to post scams. Members have were told to stop reporting it. Yet here we are, account is still posting scams as of 3 days ago.

If it weren’t for PayPal preventing the transaction, @Skyranger would have just been scammed yesterday morning by an account that has been posting scams here and being reported for months…

Idk, I don’t think you need 60 years of experience to realize how absurd that is…

I'm not on this forum but at the VLJ, because I'm just interested by WW2 jackets.
I just come here to keep an eye out for sales that might interest me.
I'm not a seller, just a buyer.
I almost lost $500 because I trusted an account here with thousands of posts. Thanks to PayPal for saving me. If you on this forum can't ban the scammer's account, then you're complicit.

The lesson to me seems to be less about this forum's "complicitness" and more about maybe becoming an actual member of the community before you start trying to take advantage of it. Not saying that would have saved you in this instance, but at least if you actually had any actual personal investment here you might be less prone to throwing accusations around.

Waaaay to many people here just trying to buy and sell - and waaay too many newbies voicing an opinion about this forum with hardly any experience here at all. You've got six messages and one of them is an accusation - that's not a great way to participate imo.

@photo2u has 2,500+ msgs here and was also almost scammed by this account that has been posting scams and been reported for months….

Are his complaints valid?

It’s not an issue of community and participation.

I understand the sentiment of wanting people to participate and invest in community and I agree. It’s just a bit discouraging to see this happen when it’s easily preventable.

I understand the sentiment of wanting people to participate and invest in community, but it’s a hard sell when stuff like this happens and it’s met with “oh well your new”

Photo2u's comments are absolutely more welcome than those of newbies - not only because he actually has a relationship with this forum but because his comments on this thread were measured, thoughtful contributions to the culture of this community rather than aggressive knee-jerk reactions by individuals whose single purpose on this site is to find deals.

Regardless, it was not the "complaints" that I objected to - it was the accusations that our mods are "complicit" in fraud. The way I see it, you take risks buying and selling here and it's not the mods' responsibilities to shelter you from them. If you want that kind of protection, shop eBay. That the mods go to extra lengths to serve and protect this community is known and appreciated by folks who actually participate.

Fair enough. But I also understand the frustration. This account has been hacked, recovered, hacked again, and reported.

The risk to the community should outweigh the feelings of one member. And to say that “We have a process to prevent this” seems disingenuous when it’s been going on for months. 3 people tried to send this guy money this weekend. 2 of them are seasoned, active members.

If the mods are saying they’re working on it and to trust them and their years of experience, I want to believe them, and I wont go so far as saying their “complicit”in the scam. But I don’t blame anyone for being upset given the recent events here.

Maybe I could weigh in, as somebody who hasn't been here forever (2019), but perhaps long enough, and as somebody who has not only participated in the actual forums, but the classifieds as well, as both a buyer and seller.

I think the old guard and the new guys each have valid points here.

I think if you come here just to buy or sell and don't participate in the other stuff, then it's going to be a bit aggravating, especially to the mods (who have a largely thankless job) when you complain about the safety of the classifieds section. Because this isn't Grailed or whatever. It's a not a marketplace-oriented site, it's a forum for discussion that happens to also curate a robust marketplace feature.

On the other hand, there is no getting around the fact that this scammer has slipped through the cracks and managed to use a trusted member's account to continuously attempt to defraud people, regardless of the behind-the-scenes process which is supposed to protect against that. I can't speak as to why this has happened, and I honestly wouldn't want to entertain guesses, as that gets a bit too close to looking for someone to blame other than the scammer, and as I said, mods have a thankless job, this isn't supposed to be the thrust of their purview, and whatever they are able to do is welcome. Again... this is a discussion forum with a marketplace feature, not a dedicated marketplace site.

So we have two valid points of view here regarding this problem. Personally, I think a solution comes down to agency and initiative among forum members. If you come here just to buy or sell, you are perpetuating the problem. Get involved, call out scammers when you see them, participate in the discussion forums, get to know people here and be known yourself. The single most important tool for spotting the inherent erratic posting behavior that is the telltale sign of a hacked account is community. In short... post in discussions from time to time. More than "like" or whatever. Know and be known. And instances like this will be fewer.

Friend, I do have some post here. However, I do not read every single thread. As I stated before, I did not know that the profile might have been compromised. As far as I knew, his post appeared legit. Furthermore, I have communicated JBlake in several different occasions before and discuss zip options for his custom build projects and a Californian vest he previously had for sale. Additionally, we communicated about his jackets before. As far as I concerned, He was good in my book. I was in the dark regarding the profile's controversy of the past few months. If I had known, I would have not proceeded with this transaction.

The purpose of my comment regarding this particular scam was to inform how some scammers find ways to trick others in believing their scams.

No, you haven't been here very long. Members who have been with us for a while know that most of what we do is "behind the scenes."

We have a process that not only protects the actual account holder, but also precludes posting by the probable scammer. I'm not going into details about the process, but I will tell you that it has been started.

Your comment that we are "Exposing your members to theft for the sake of someone’s post history . . . . " is off the mark. Once the process to return the account to the original holder has been started, no one can post on that account. So, none of our members are exposed to theft through that hacked account.

Thank you for your comments. Even though the three members of the moderation team working on this particular issue have almost 60 years of experience here, we are always open to suggestions as to how we can better do our jobs. PC

Everyone has had his say on this topic. Time to move along and leave it alone.
