Goodbye to Yankee Stadium

I think it's just horrible when they tear down the old baseball stadiums. The new ones are these ugly monstrosities without the character and class the old ones had. Johnnydnh is still mad about the Polo Grounds.

I was pretty depressed when they tore down Busch Stadium last year, but have to admit that the new version looks pretty sharp. The drawings for the new Yankee Stadium also look pretty promising.

But yeah, in both cases the "old" ones were better.

Strikes me as an awful boondoggle, really -- have they even finished paying off the bonds on the reconstruction they did back in the 70s?

We went thru a lot of talk about "the obsolesence of Fenway Park," which is nine years older than Yankee Stadium, but fortunately, the new owners have had the sense to acknowledge the historical importance of the place and have declared that they have no intention of ever moving out. I wish more owners had that sense of responsibility to their own heritage (the Tigers and White Sox stand out as the most recent examples...)

I hadn't heard about this. What a shame. When we lived in Noo Yawk I'd been to several ballgames there.

I remember when they tore down Edmonds Field at Broadway and Riverside in Sacramento to biuld a Gemco. The Solons played there for years in the PCL. Send the Giants back to New York and the Dodgers back to Brooklyn!.

Haversack.

I've heard tell that the late-night stock clerks in the Safeway built where Seals Stadium used to be, (16th and Bryant), occassionally see fielders running through the grocery shelves and aisles.

I think it stinks.
There is a lot of talk in the article about progress and not becoming a commercially named venue. As I walk through Yankee Stadium I could can not see how "unprogressive" the place is. The new stadium will have less seating for regular folk but more luxury boxes. Way to go Big Money!! If I were a conspiracy minded fellow I might see something fishy here..
I wonder at what point will the new stadium be changed to " The Sony/Dodge/Yankee Stadium." :eusa_doh:

This is a shame. The Golden Era is slipping away faster and faster. Wonder how the real Yankee's fans feel about this. Although, technically being from Boston I'm not supposed to care about anything Yankee related. I was born in Queens, so I'm a Yankee's fan at heart. This is sad. So many memories just being torn down. The best part about going to a game is the nostalgia I feel by going to an old stadium. That's why I like to go to the sox games. I don't know what I'd do if the plans to tear down Fenway came to fruition.

Great points Feraud.

Sure, I know that the original Yankee Stadium is old, but don't tell me that with all the smart architects, engineers, and contractors out there that they couldn't find a way to update it without tearing the whole thing down and building new!

Haversack.

Now we have the Rivercats and they play at Raley Field (named after the grocery store chain). That Gemco is now a Target.

My thoughts exactly Jess. The building is there. You mean to tell me that they couldn't revoate it like they did thirty years earlier?! :( :rage:

I am wondering what exactly is the problem with Yankee Stadium?? I do not recall reading about or experiencing electrical, plumbing, or foundation problems..
The house that Ruth built is being replaced by "The house brought to you by Dell."

It really is a shame. Like many of you said, I don't quite understand why a renovation isn't in order, is an entire new stadium really needed? Not only will their be less seating for "regular folk" but, the regular seating will also cost more. Not to mention all of the congestion in the neighborhood, all of the construction people who live their will have to got through. Like I think Feraud said, the thing is, there isn't anything wrong with the current stadium it isn't as though there is some problem that needs to be remedied. Just silly and a waste of my tax dollars. :(
