When I took driver's ed thirty years ago (yikes!) the message that was pounded into my head by the no-nonsense ex-Marine instructor was "DRIVE DEFENSIVELY." And that's the way I drive to this day -- I'm not out to compete with other drivers, I'm there to get to my destination as safely as I possibly can, while always being alert to potentially-stupid moves made by other drivers -- too many of whom tend to drive *offensively.*
I get reasonable mileage driving that way -- about 27mpg in my '97 Corolla -- I don't make jackrabbit jumps, I don't make sudden decelerations, and I don't weave and dodge around like I'm playing some kind of cheap video game. Smooth and steady all the way -- and if that's driving like an old lady, well, gee, that's what I am...
The best mileage I ever got, though, was in my late lamented '81 VW Rabbit diesel -- 55mpg under optimal conditions. Those were the days when I could drive to Boston from here on $5 worth of fuel -- sigh....
