Good grief, my head shrank!

Our own indycop asked me the question in a recent WHAYW post, had my head shrunk with my recent weight loss. I commented that I thought it might have a little. Yesterday I had a tape measure handy and measured my head for the first time in a long time--22.5"!! I was a solid 23" without question before. Now I know why some of my 7 3/8 (and smaller 7 1/2) hats have been loose lately.

I've dropped about 30 lbs, but never imagined that hat size might be affected that much.

Bad news: Let's hope there's no problem with that hat that's being mailed from Oregon (I'm not too worried, my others still seem to fit okay).

Good news: Maybe I can get in on the cheaper 7 1/4 vintage hat market! (Oh, wait, Douglas is a 7 1/4--drat! from Jimmy the Lid's size to Douglas's! :eusa_doh: )

Anybody else ever have this problem?

Not yet, but I am concerned about it. I am in the process of shedding weight, a lot of weight.

I have been, for at least 25 years, a size 7 1/8 and still am. But, if I lose the amount of weight I want, I fear I will become a size 7, which is what I think I might have been when I was young.

I have noticed, also, that my hat size changes slightly depending on my hair style -- longer and thicker, the hat is a little tighter; really short hair, hat is a bit loose.

At least we can do things to alter the size of the hat. I'd prefer to tighten the hats by inserting strips under the hat band rather than have to stretch hats. That never seems to work for me.

I went the other way -- I was once a 6 7/8 and now I'm a 7 1/8. I thought it was just a natural progression of things, but now you've got me worried.

I'm hoping it won't be a problem, Art. Your hats have always fit slightly on the snug side on me; now they're slightly on the loose side. I'll assess when it gets here. Alas, no box on the front step today.

Alan It's a lot better to have them loose than small!:D
I recently found my Army garrison cap and had to look at the size...........7 3/8:eusa_doh: :( far cry from the current 7 5/8.:eusa_doh:

I don't know if it's too personal but hopefully you lost it because you wanted to and not because of any health issues?!

Thanks for the concern, IC. The weight loss is due to better eating and a lot more exercise. I didn't quite intend to lose as much as I did, but it just kept coming off. I weigh about what I did when I was 20 years old, and I'm in better shape than I was then. So, no complaints.

Now I know why people kept calling me a fathead...

So if I were to hypothetically gain 30 pounds my head size would increase? Not that it is humanly possible to gain 10 pounds.

Who knows, maybe some 7 1/4 fedoras will mysteriously appear in celebration of your down-sizing!

Congratulations on the new you.

Now this is an interesting thing, indeed! In the last 15 months I have lost 71 pounds but my hat size has not changed at all!!! [huh] Not even by a single centimeter.

Maybe it depends on how we retain and lose weight? (Some people gain and retain in the trunk and above first, others have a tendency to retain and gain in the hips, buttocks, thighs, etc. first)

Oh BTW, congratulations on the weight loss AlanC.

This is it here. I have worn the same size hat since I was a teenager. During that time I have l changed weight from very very lean to fat and have never changed hats sizes at all. I gain weight in the face but not subcutaneously on my skull. My hair far more effects how my hats fit than does my weight. It's just an individual thing.
