Before radio and telephones were more common, police around the world raised the alarm, warned of danger, or called for backup using their various police-whistles...

How It's Made: Metropolitan Police-Whistles.

One thing I think the world would benefit from is the return of the beat-officer.

I don't know any city, or country, in the world today, which still has regular beat-patrols. Except for small country towns, I suppose. I really wish they would come back.

Where I stay in London (SW1) we have regular beat patrols.

it is universally accepted that Police Motorcycle Squads are among the top 2% in rider skills. There are civilian rider courses taught by former Motormen members that teach unique and somewhat "secret' skiils of riding. If you get achance to ever view a local community's Police Rodeo... go...!!!

Like this? Listen to the foot-boards scraping! I have been ridding for 45 years, and there is no way I could do that with a full dress Harley.

Stearmen, that man can ride. I spent three years earning my living on the back of a motorcycle, some of the most fun I've ever had. After a LOT of practice I got to where I could scrape the floorboards on slow, tight turns. Scared he'll out of me the first time it happened. After working a number of accidents involving my fellow officers I decided to transfer to something safer, narcotics. Never dropped my bike in three years, except when I forgot to put my kickstand down, twice.

This is what happens when you get it wrong at speed!

The top photo is an officer with his ACE Four, the second, is some officers with a 1929 Harley Davidson JD with sidecar. I guarantee, no one out ran the motor officer on that ACE!

The whistle chain is still a part of our class A uniforms and we are required to wear it since it is an issued item. However, the whistles themselves are not issued and therefore I don't believe anyone in my Sheriff's Department actually carries one (other than me).

A couple of pics that I saved because ... well ... they are cool!

1958 auto accident in downtown Springfield, MO (I want that jacket):

1959 riot at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO (I want that M/C):

BTW -- my daughter-in-law is a few weeks into the Police Academy here in Springfield. We are very proud.

That's fantastic and something to be very proud of. The best of luck to her for a successful time at the Academy and for a successful career. I am thankful every day for our police and for the young people who join.
