Looking for any / all photos of jackets in Seal Goat or Black Goat. Vintage or newly produced, doesn't matter. Just trying to get ideas of how it drapes on different styles. My previous jackets are all thick steer / horse which is a different look. Thanks

Perhaps do a search. One thing you need to be mindful of is that goat varies and so will the drape. If it's chrome tanned, or veg tanned, or combination chrome and veg tanned, or naked, or 2 oz or 2.5 oz thick - all will make a big difference to the look. I have Goat from Alexanders that is 2.5 oz, chrome and veg tanned and as stiff as horse and hard to the touch. Curiously the dye is fading faster than any leather i have had before. I think I prefer the nore commercial chrome tanned goat that Gibson and Barnes use.

Johnson Leathers goat cafe racer.

It's fairly light and soft.

Fanch, I like that pioneer.

Seb - It would never occur to me to use goat on a cafe racer, yet it makes so much sense. Is that yours? It looks like the zip starts higher than JL's stock n-200.

Yeah it's mine. About three years old. I didn't ask for a ny mods apart from length so I don't know if it differs.

Great photos. Fanch - on the Pioneer, has the seal goat aged/developed at all or is it basically still the same just a bit softer?

Really nice Maxwell in black goat! Digging that look. How do you think an action back (bi-swing, Half Belt deluxe style) would look in goat? Would it sag too much considering the soft hide?

Three very different kinds of Goat:

ELC: Veg Tanned, Semi Aniline (I believe), spray finished. Very stiff at first and almost smooth, still hard to the touch, but now comfortably broken in with some nice grain coming out.

EM Front.JPG

G+B: Chrome Tanned. Tough but soft and with great grain right from the get go. Slow to develop character compared to the ELC (G+B - 14 years old....ELC - 1 year old).

GB Front.JPG

My issue Pharr Brand G-1: Chrome Tanned. Soft but somewhat lacking in character. Still, for a ten year jacket that has been stuffed everywhere, pretty tough.

In N Texas we hardly have enough jacket days to break in all of the jackets I have. The veg tanned goatskins on both my Pioneer and Maxwell jackets are both thicker than the chrome tanned goatskin used on my G&B Expedition (Indy) and Cooper G-1 jackets, although the veg tanned goatskin jackets were supple when received, more so than Aero's MWHH and definitely more so than Aero's FQHH. I don't think the veg tanned goatskin used by Aero for an action back (bi-swing, Half Belt deluxe style) would sag and would work well.

Fanch are you sure the seal is not combination tanned? I always thought it was

That said, aside from colour, are you able to detect any differences between the black and seal goatskins?

PS I can answer the OP about a bi-swing back in goat. It looks good. When I can, I'll add a picture later to show you one

Aero Maxwell in black veg tanned goatskin:

How are you finding this one as it breaks in? Does it show wear, and how does it cope with rain? I handled the black goat at the factory in July, it's lovely stuff. I was actually considering it as the primary chocie for my modified Dustbowl until I saw the Horween Bison... I do, however, have this pencilled in to my list for a Rockefeller....

Edward, I think the only jacket that I have that does not still look as new is a five to six-year old Aero Bronco A-2 that I bought from another Lounger a few months ago. Thus far my two favorite hides are Aero's black goatskin and brown FQHH. Schitz, aside from color (colour), I'm not sure that I see an appreciable difference between the black and seal goatskins.

How about sleeve length in goat, does it shorten up more than CXL steer / horse? So if I know my steer/horse length is always 26" would the goat need to be longer? And how would goat react to hot water soaks?

If your steer/horse sleeve length is always 26", my recommendation would be not to change it. My ideal sleeve length is a minimum of 27" and maximum of 25.5". Personally I have never used hot water soaks (HWT) for anything, but that's just me.

Any thoughts on how a Black goatskin half belt would look with a black mouton collar? Fully lined in moleskin, might make a nice winter coat.

Said I'd post one with a bi-swing back.. well this link saves me the trouble. And it has a fur collar too

http://www.alexanderleathers.com/sale/half-belt-black-goatskin.html

It was actually made for me but sent back for the same thing in size 40. It seems I've had a growth spurt. The sleeves are meant to be 27.5" and as I remember, they were, so I'm not sure where they've got 29" from. According to me, the back length is 26.75". Has a double lining too that also isn't mentioned on their listing. Apart from being a bit too tight on me it was great. Eventually I'll get round to reviewing the one I do have, which is awesome. Exactly the same as this but with riri zips and an interior windflap
