Goatskin -- any input?

I tend to prefer goat. Good quality, well (veg) tanned will patinate. I've owned some superb russet Perry Sportswear 23377 A-2 jackets in the past, which had burnished to become almost golden.
I currently have a Good Wear Spiewak A-2 in French goat (seal dyed over russet), which should patinate over time to show russet high points. It's a lovely, supple hide.

"I'm goat. The preferred icon of murderous, psychotic heavy metal fans." Also, consider: "He's an old goat;" "...just a scapegoat;" "He was the goat in the scam." An ignoble beast.
U.S. Navy Chiefs are historically and reverently referred to as "Goats" (the goat being the official mascot of the Navy). We congregate in "The Goat Locker" for our meetings. Rather apropos that Navy flight jackets are made of goatskin. The goat will always be a noble beast to any Navy Chief :)

rmconner80, Would you possibly post the weight of your jacket? Nice jacket, BTW. Thanks

I wish it was mine Fanch; it's rmconnor80's jacket. I love that first pic; the LW Raider is on my list of "must have's" (quite a long list!).

With the exception, of course, of our Navy CPO's! By the way, if you get the chance look up a very funny piece by Mark Twain about the sexual drive of goats. Could be a connection.

^^^ LOL! That's funny Tropicalbob :D
Once I made Chief, I never thought of goats in the same way again.

Aside from some of the darker connections in history and pop culture regarding goats, a nice, vegetable tanned goatskin is a very good choice for a mid-weight leather jacket.

Regarding the goat leather I am curious is it due to its pebbly texture always a full grain leather?

Good question. I've often wondered why goatskin is pebbly. The live animal doesn't have a pebbly textured skin, or does it?
Maybe the hide is too thin to split? If a goat hide is sanded down or has a corrected finish will it still be pebbly?

Same with buffalo and bison (American buffalo) hides; they are thick, heavy and very grainy hides that have no smooth areas. I really like the look!

Well, I hit the switch on a goatskin LW "Raider." It'll be my 1st goatskin jacket. Thanks for your input!

I'm getting one as well. Too many A-2's and G-1's in my closet; the Raider has military styling but is a completely different beast. Good choice Sheepdog149!

The Horween bison is really tempting. Maybe even more than the grain, is the brown color. Really stellar. I know it's supposed to be about the heaviest hide available but it looks so great. Aero, Johnson, and I think AL all use it. I've seen the Johnson bison sample in person and color wise, it was probably the best!
Also kudu. Another really cool hide.

Horween bison is about 3.5 oz thick what is (at least according to me) not to thick, but kudu from AL is around 5.5 oz., what means that such jacket can push the scale over 10 lb.
