I have a few pairs of gloves lying around - various colours, and nice to have a pair in each coat where possible. The warmest I've had are a cheap pair of sheepskin gloves; I also have a few pairs of leather. For casual wear, among the best I've found for price vs utility are the old British Army "Northern Ireland Gloves":

I've seen some of these more recently with carbon knuckles, I guess for the mc look and/or (not sure if they are issued at all) useful in a ruck if needsbe. Mine are the old-style padded, and no political statement is made by their wearing! I'm old enough to remember seeing squaddies on patrol in Belfast wearing these. Cheap, basic, decent and warm. The knits help keep the draft out. Got a couple of pairs of MC gloves, Helstons (with no carbon knuckle plates or anything). Not unlike the old USAAF A3(?) gloves, though much warmer.

For a long time during the pandemic I wore leather gloves everywhere, some cheap driving gloves so I didn't over heat. Now though I'm due getting out the Winter gloves.

I got deerskin gloves from Churchill Glove Co. and a set of Elk gloves from Fox Creek Leather. The deerskin is very soft and the elk is very grainy and thicker. I got the motorcycle ones, but they can be used for non motorbiking !!!

Based on Churchill's size guide, I was a Small. When I received the gloves, they were too small, so I had to exchange them for a Medium. The process was fairly painless, but it did take a couple of weeks. The medium fit me tight, but these should stretch with use. They are great gloves!!

You guys have convinced me I ‘need’ a pair of leather gloves in my life. Maybe someday I’ll travel somewhere cold in the winter or something. Or maybe I’ll use them for some light gardening or for shooting?

I’m going to get the Fox Creek Cascadias in deer while they are on sale.

I'd love to have a pair in this style in a red / oxblood colour, but I've yet to find a pair that aren't scary money. The Motostuka ones look fab, but they're eighty quid odds, while the red Svarog option is over £100. Beautiful gloves that will doubtless last a lifetime, but for the limits of unlined leather gloves, a touch spendy for my pocket.

Unlined gloves are not what I am looking for, when I am working (away from my sit-down job (we are doing a self-build out in darkest Hertfordshire)) I wear £5 work gloves, if I am cutting wood then more protection/£s.

Having cast off my London/city life I find myself reverting back to my bike riding youth dress style. My clothes need to be hardier but still have quality and style.

This is what I need in 'walking around' gloves/outerwear.

I get what you mean entirely. Dressy gloves for the office and everything from collar and tie up to a suit are easy-peasy; when you want something a bit sturdier for kicking around in, it's much harder to find them with a bit of panache. Sort of gloves you wouldn't worry about getting a bit scuffed or dirty... The Motostuka fit that bill very nicely, except for the price... For me, they are in danger of being a bit like spending a grand on a pair of work boots and then never wearing them because they're not dressy enough for the office and I'm too scared of ruining them to wear them as intended....

Unlined gloves I find great for having stuffed in a pocket 'in case', or - as part of the 'look' - hanging from a belt clip, but yes, at this time of year not much good. I did pull on a pair of my cheap driving gloves the other day on the way out the door as they were lying around. You know the type: unlined, perforated, knuckle holes. Great at the peak of the original lockdown when I was concerned to keep my hands covered and still able to use a PIN keypad and such. In terms of warmth, not so much. Better than nothing, but really back to the old saw that while leather makes a great wind-breaker, it doesn't keep heat in otherwise. Purely for warmth, the best gloves I ever had are a few pairs of cheap, sheepskin gloves with a suedey outer. If I could find something like that with a more water-shedding, leather outer, that would be perfect. Of course the trick as always is finding something that is both functional and has a bit of style to it... May well go back to looking at Goldtop's offerings again.

Good idea, I must have a look into Helstons again. They make great stuff - I have a pair similar to this in black. They're also a rare birdy - Goldtop are now the only other one that springs to mind - that have a CE safety rating on gloves with a bit of style and that aren't a bit too "Power Ranger" for my tastes, which is significant for anyone considering wearing them for bike use.

I have a pair of those myself in deerskin, I think you will be very pleased with them.

They are nice, but unfortunately they ended up being way too small. I took the advice of the shop in sizing down from my normal size 9 to an 8 as I like tighter gloves, but I couldn’t even get my hand inside them.

Hopefully they restock soon and I can get the right size.

I had the same problem! Measured my hand according to their instructions and received gloves that I could not even get over my knuckles…
Fortunately in my case they had the larger size in stock.
