While I'd prefer if the collar points were tucked under the sweater vest, what I like here is that the clothes fit her (especially in the shoulders) as sometimes the guys clothes look too big and almost clownish on some women. A little big can work in a fun way, but too big can slip into goofy, IMHO.

There are many here who know more than I (LizzieMaine for one), but the '20s were definitely a time of liberation for women (versus the stricter period before) and that was reflected in the clothes (less structure, less undergarments, less frills and less clearly feminine attire - all breaks from the past).

Part of that was a vogue of an ideal of androgyny for women (small breasts - some women "taped" down their breasts to reduce their bust line - no hips or waist, etc.) and, for some, dressing in guys clothes was part of that meme. The flappers with bobbed hair (more male like) highlighted this style.

Note in the below - flatish chest, no real waist, not much ornamentation and bobbed hair. While not dramatic to us today, this was a big break from how women were dressing and grooming before the '20s.

Yes and then No. Women in the 1940's were taking over more and more men's jobs as they went into the armed services. Consequently on certain jobs, like those in our Factories, largely for safety and consistency, they were donning work clothes (like overalls) that were previously men's domain (as were the jobs). In offices it became trendy for women to wear suits with trousers like the men they were replacing there......as the article states, they took on the men's bow-tie to go with their "mannish suits". All of this in a more practical way, but none the less following the clothing trends started in the 20"s.

Darn it, what does it say about me that I noticed the cars and cool Art Deco building in the background before the girls (please don't answer).

However, once noticing said girls, my thought is that the one with the tie is trying too hard to have a loud outfit. The tie and pants would have been enough, the loud pattern on the pants (and God knows what they look like in color) is sliding into clown territory.

I do like the simplicity of the outfit and clean lines of the skirt on the other one, but that's not really the point of the thread.

All that said, how much fun would it be if we could go to lunch in the Hollywood Maryland Grill?
