This came my way recently. I knew the original owner, who passed away a couple of years ago. His widow told me he had had it a long time. I went through it for some kind of label but there is nothing, anywhere. It is lined in a plain olive blanket wool and I'm sure this is a replaced lining. It's quite heavy, and though it has been worn a lot and shows a lot of grain, it's still quite stiff.
It smelt of mothballs and had some rough places but Pecard's took care of it.
It's just oversized enough to wear a bulky sweater underneath. I wish I could say it was older, but I'm thinking early 70s. The widow thought much older, but she thought the reason there were no tags is that it predated such things, so that's no help.
The belt is missing, and three buttons have been removed on one side. I guess he didn't expect to want to button it the other way.

I'm no expert on dating civvy jackets, but looks late 40's -50's to me. to my eye, stuff in the mid-late 60's thru the 70's just had a different "look" to it

Definitely much earlier. With that back, it's safely in the 1930s if American, possibly as late as 1940s if European.

It's the lapels that throw me.

I think it's similar to this one, which is a jacket I'd been searching for. I'm glad she offered it to me or it would have gone to Goodwill.

The pockets are lined with wide corduroy, like a peacoat. It also has ribbed storm cuffs.

Very nice - looks like a more elegant, streamlined version of the classic German double breasted 1930's garment that many wrongly describe as a u-boat coat.

I've always had a soft spot for the Mariner-type coat, and I think that's one of the nicest I've ever seen. Just beautiful. I'd imagine it's fairly hefty.
