I've used acetone on shoes with no ill effects. I dries the leather, so you will want to treat it with something afterwards.

Peter, which G&B A-2 model do you have? The reason I ask is that their "historical" models are veg tanned HH or goatskin, and their less expensive "regular" A-2 is chrome tanned HH with polyester lining and synthetic cuffs and waist band. In either case, I would tend to leave as is. My experience is G&B's chrome tanned HH will change appearance over time little, if at all.

Peter, since it fits, honestly said, my recommendation would be to keep it as a "beater" jacket. I too used to own the same jacket as you but rid myself of it for the same reasons as you don't like yours. ;)

I own a 400 dollar flight jacket with a sanded down artificial grain leather. It fits perfect, but that leather... ugly as hell. I wear it on night outs drinking and secretly hope it gets stolen so I can justify ordering the same jacket again, this time in a nicer leather. :D

On the positive side, chrome tanned leather is pretty darn waterproof so if you're going out on a day of rain or off-and-on thunderstorms, it's the perfect jacket. I've worn my chrome tanned LW HH in torrential downpours and was dry underneath.

It might be a pva seal you know - Feibings sell a couple of products to seal leather after dyeing - both seem to be pva based - 'Bag Kote' and 'Resolene'. It's quite possible that their tannery has used a similar product. If it's not pva it's a white emulsion of some kind of 'plastic' in water. Once dry it's waterproof and stops dye bleed. I used Resolene on a sheepskin jacket that had lost its surface but didn't like the effect so I put the jacket in the washer on a wool wash and it came off.

When I first joined the Navy, the leather shoes we were issued had a coating on them. We called it "quartermaster" and it had to be removed before we could put polish on them. The coating was something that was put on the leather to protect them while in storage at the warehouse. We used shaving cream to remove the coating. That seemed to work very well.

Bick 1 for cleaning and removing of dyes and finishes on leathers. Bick 4 for hydrating and giving a finish coat. Don't know about much else, if it's really that bad I'd say send it back to Gibson &
Barnes or ask them to re-work it.

Shipping an entry level jacket across the Pond to G&B would not be a viable option for the OP.

Hi.it really is that bad..if I wasn't in Scotland I would be at their door asking what is this finish..I got a reply from Gibson & Barnes saying speak to Drew if I'm unhappy &it's just how horsehide is & to wear it more to break it in ...lol.I said non of my aeros.eastman. lostworlds. Vanson etc etc have this issue * as for wearing it ...it's 5years old
...the hide still looks like a well made pvc A2...hate knocking G&B. I have a great skylines jacket of theirs in fantastic goatskin..this russet h/h is just the worst I've ever encountered...in 45years of buying jackets..I still have 30 of them..29 if anyone wants to cover shipping

Pity - I've had three G&B goat jackets and each was beautiful - best goat I've owned. Still have one it has aged nicely over 8 years - no PU on mine.
