Well, no hats. I ordered and my VISA was charged immediately. I have had no communication from Major Surplus since. So on the 31st I called them. The helmets are out of stock, were out of stock when I ordered, and they don't know when they will arrive. Yet on their website my order shows "Complete" and "Waiting to Ship." No indication that anything is out of stock or backordered.

I told the lady to cancel the order, and she promised she would send an email confirmation of the cancellation immediately. It's been two days now (June 2nd) and I haven't heard a word from them. Great customer service all 'round.

Major Surplus & Survival is a company I will NOT do business with again. If anyone here has had a better experience with them, I would welcome hearing about it.

My go-to source for piths is tagsafari.com, a company based in Zimbabwe that makes safari clothing for people who are really headed out on safari. The one on my head came from there. It's the Victorian 'cavalry' model and, yes, I wore it to Mozambique for buffalo, bushpig and bushbuck. Great fun. The trackers were amused . . .

Finally, a thread up my alley. I found this helmet in a antique shop for $10. It has a nice well aged patina to it. However, I would really like a british calvary helmet as well as a couple of other styles. Here are a couple of pics that had the best safari feel.

And a light double rifle in something like .303 British. "Husband? Oh, he's back in London doing something so I got bored and . . . "

My idea of an ideal light double would be a 38-55 or possibly a 405 Win loaded light. I know neither is British, but at least brass is readily available.
A 22 Hornet could be fun but it might be a bit on the heavy side for the caliber.

Yeah, I had one of the old postal helmets when I was a kid. Got it from a neighbor that was a carrier. They were the same as the old "Hawley" style (use that name simply as a reference) USGI made sun helmet but in blue. Picked up one of the old GI style sun helmets at Goodwill. I use it when on the tractor here. Good ventilation.

Still debating whether I want a pith helmet for our jaunt up Mt. St. Helens this summer.
Then, which style? Do I go for the Zulu Brithish style in white? The French style, WWII Heer DAK style? Maybe the flat top kind? Would be fun and it would go with my cultivating handlebar mustache.

Cheers!

Dan
