Deutscher Schützenhut (German Shooting Hat), no company marks, size 58cm, Open Crown 6 inches, Loden Wool or Loden Wool - Fur Blend, with Crease Clip. The hat shop (Hermann Krause) the Crease Clip was in Reichenbach im Vogtland, Saxony and the seller is from Saxony. It appears shooting clubs were banned in the DDR/GDR (1949) so it might no be from East Germany and the Crease Clip (could be pre WWII) was added later. The Schützenhut feather is original to the hat. My guess is the hat is from the early 1950s when Shooting Clubs were allowed again in West Germany (I believe they were also banned under the Nazis).

Update!
(I am starting to have second thoughts on this hat. It might actually be much older than I previously thought. )

Looks great, Steve! Welcome to the Schützenverein - Normaly Schützen use a short brim Fedora - This hat is a special version of a Schützenhut!

Manfred, Thanks! You also have the larger brim with ones with the left side snapped to the crown. I would guess the Homburg style didn't survive much past the 1950s. Unfortunately the seller couldn't tell me anything about so not sure how it ended up in East Germany and with a pre WWII Crease Clip from Saxon hat shop.

This one I have seen before but it was great to see it in better detail (late 1800s).

I believe I have seen this one before (late 1800s). It's really great!

In Boater (late 1800s) I haven't seen this one before.

Group photo (late 1800s) I haven't seen this one before.

These are from 1906 and Edward VII appears to be wearing a gray Stiff Felt with open crown Homburg style tendencies. I have never seen these photos before.

Thanks! Yes the clip was over the label. The hat has to be from West Germany (probably 1951 or a little later) but the old Crease Clip is from East Germany and probably pre WWII. My guess is that the hat ended up in East Germany post 1990 and someone added the old Crease Clip. I have another hat with a Crease Clip but it doesn't have a tip label.

As I am always curious about those vintage details, and you have more than one example, are they a soft metal? Like a tin or aluminum that is flexible to open and then pinch the felt? Or is it more substantial?

Bob, Yes they are soft metal. I would guess tin. The two hats I have are wool or wool / fur blend with tall crowns. The felt springs back which results in an interesting effect that you can see in the photos. Josh B. found a box (very old stock) of them recently but is waiting for the shipment to arrive.

Hutfabrik J. A. Seidl München probably early 1900s. This Melone is made of Wool which was common for pre WWII German and Austrian Stiff Felt hats. Top price point Pre WWII German and Austrian Wool Stiff and Soft Felt hats were of a high quality. The quality of this hat is excellent and it's in super condition (sweatband size tag still present). I was excited to find this Melone because Hutfabrik J. A. Seidl München was strongly linked to Mayser Ulm.

whereby the meritorious participation of Mr Seidl the Mayser Works Ulm was saved. "
