American newspaper ad (Block Brothers, St. Joseph, MO) from 09/04/1913 mentions the famous JHS Austrian Velours.

Amazing old black back bow JHS Standard Cystall Velour, size 4 1/2 Point. This one belongs to Robert (RLK).

I received this info from the seller.

Hello Steve,
Anton Schätz was a very old ( i thing the first and best) hut maker in Tegernsee (Oberbayern). he is near us, about 15 km away.

Could be the Austrian Velour hat body was sourced out of Czecho Slovakia and the hat made by this hat maker. Also could have been made by some other company and sold out of his shop. All I know for sure is it is one of the finest hats I have encountered.

A few days ago I wanted to wear my black 1920's G.J.M. velour - only to learn that the last rain had somehow ruined the ribbon. There were a few rather nasty mould stains that wouldn't go away so I decided to make a new ribbon and bow using some vintage charcoal gray grosgrain ribbon. I also used a piece of lighter, slightly blueish gray ribbon to add some more interest to the bow construction.

Looks like this now:

Mario, Sorry to hear about the original ribbon but the new one looks great! The main ribbon color is similar to my Hans Baumgärtner Velour restore. I like the contrast against the black Velour. BTW you are getting nimble with the needle and thread.

Thank you, Steve! :D

Is that the one for which I did the multiple colored previews in Photoshop?
The color of the ribbon on the GJM is actually a tad darker in person; it appears to be lighter in the photo.

BTW you are getting nimble with the needle and thread.

I don't know. Maybe. What I do know is that I also keep getting bloody fingers! ;)

The felt on this particular hat is especially rigid. I ended up making funny sounds every time I attempted to make a stitch...

Yes that is the one. Here's a photo of it.

I am sure working through that thick Velour was no easy task!

Felix Weissbach Klapp-Hutfabrik DeutschesReichPatent No. 233295

Felix Weissbach Klapp-Hutfabrik DeutschesReichPatent No. 233295 leather pocket calendar - diary from 1915. The patent is for fabric used for collapsible top hats also known as opera hats. It doesn't have any entries and the only wear is on the outside so probably storage related.

Hi all,

I just posted my new German hat under 'post new hats' :)
It's from 'Zeumer Hut-Fabrik', Mannheim. Anyone know anything about this company/hutmacher?

This is new hutfabrik to me. I will do some searching and see if I can find anything. Based on the liner and sweatband it looks like it could be an old one. If it has a paper label behind the sweatband can you take a photo and post it? Is the liner stitched in or glued? Also what is the word under the circle in liner logo?

Thanks for posting the photos!
