'gaudy' eBay Photos?

Yeah, not offensive so much as... distracting. But I've found most things these type of guys model on eBay when I search for "vintage suit" etc. aren't really what I have in mind anyway. [huh]

Well eclectic/1980s is kinda in style at the moment, if I were selling any of my vintage I'd try to make it look as on-trend as possible to get the best return. I think that as long as it accurately portrays the product then a little youth-oriented styling is probably in everybody's interests xx

The only time I really get bugged is when I see something like an Edwardian Walking Jacket over a bra, and then I'm thinking, "Gak! At least put a slip on, the frackin' thing is almost 100 years old dummy! I don't want your skin and oils all over it!" I may think the rest is stupid looking but I don't really care. The seller is trying to make the money, honey, and I respect that!

My feelings exactly. I don't think those photos are offensive, may be they are in bad taste...but offensive? Nah.... it takes much more to offend me lol!

Actually, that gal in the blue cardie, flamboyant pants, and gold cummerbund is a dead ringer for my 17-year old niece. To her, the '80s are as far past as the '50s were when I was her age, so to their way of thinking I guess they're honestly projecting a "vintage look."

That really irritates me actually, my sister bought a dress recently that was photographed like that, they'd gathered the fabric to make the dress look as though it was a more 50s full skirted dress, when really it was dropped waisted and not nearly so flattering.

Luckily cotton is easy to alter and now it looks how it was 'supposed' to xx

hmmm, thats a problem when you don't have a model or an amenable friend to take pictures of you. I NEED a mannequin badly.

The "case in point" photo with the blue cardigan is a good example. The way the cardigan is pulled, squished, and partially-buttoned, there is absolutely no way to tell how it's shaped or how long it'd be without the belt, much less how it fits her measurements. It is not a helpful picture.

I think a good compromise would be if they photographed the item plainly so you could see what you were actually bidding on and then take a few different ones showing the different ways it could be worn. That way all customers would be satisfied.

I'm bothered by sellers placing things on their nasty green shag rugs to take pictures or holding something for the camera with a close-up of their dirty fingernails. Yuck! One time I saw a vintage poster placed on top of a kitchen counter and over a sink to take the picture and was held down by drinking glasses! :rage:

Definitely! Then you can show the item clearly, and demonstrate it's versatility. Win-win.

I just prefer they put things on a dress form and give different veiws and a really good description.

I would like to see it alone on either a mannequin or a model wearing minimal makeup and in simple, head-on poses. That's just for practicality, so I can see exactly what the item looks like. I prefer photos taken against simple backgrounds and in daylight (outside is fine).

If the item has any flaws that the seller knows about, a close-up of them is always helpful.

It's the sellers choice as to whether the item should be shown matched with other clothing items, shoes or accessories. However, the seller should make sure that the items not for sale do not somehow detract from the value of the piece. Someone mentioned bare skin against an Edwardian piece -- that's a good example of what I'm talking about. A little creativity is wonderful, though.

Well what do you expect in a thread dedicated to gaudy ebay photos?
If it were me I'd laugh because it was a joke and so is her outfit. I'd laugh because I'm confident enough not to care what other people think of how I look or what I wear. If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?
