For Whom The Bell Tolls - what jacket was Gary Cooper wearing, it was shearling but not a B3 or Irvin I don't think.

Looks to be a pretty thin "sherpa lining" on the poster sleeve... more like one of those "western frontier" style coats isn't it?.

I am also intrigued of what Jürgen Prochnow is wearing in "Das Boot"... its a shearling-ish B-6 maybe but with A-2/G-1 style ribbings and ribbed collar doesn't it? (Need to go dig into the movie)... so definitely a wooly collar and a zipper all the way up

Hi Finn.

U-boot crew wore "whatever", so some use was made of that in the costuming for the film. It's a "whatever jacket". You can see plenty of images of crew wearing checked flannel shirts and all manner of jackets- the flannel shirts almost became a uniform.

I ate some Reindeer stew in Helsinki, summer 1998- it was very warm over there. Me and my Brother also bought a tin of Syrstr??mming(I know it's a Swedish thing...) from Stockmann.
Open the tin... and run!

I forgot to buy a nice Finnish knife while I was there...

Oh yes, I'm actually a bit of a buff in that aspect, I think I got the movie/directors cut/tv series...

The most common "Finnish knife" seems to be a Swedish Mora lol But hey, if you got something touristy in mind, I just sent a real prissy one to my brother-in-law in France so I know where to get...(and cheaper ones) and no, this day and age I am *not* sending surströmming, I'll be arrested for biohazard violations lol

(I think Surströmming is the only reason Sweden hasn't been invaded. Look how they infiltrated a can into that Russian sub and up she came and landed on the Karlskrona rocks to air out...)

FWTBT Jacket

I do like that jacket .
Kind of think it might have been made just for the film or maybe was a personal jacket of Gary Cooper's
Maybe in time can have one made for me.
FWTBT is a special movie for me not only a great film but the out door shots were Filmed south of Reno in the area in and around Sonora Pass. Hope next summer to go down and shot some photos of the area. Will post when I do.

Thanks for the pic, but on my TV the sheep wool seems to be a little darker thank this shot... less bleached or whatever, which I like better. I think it's kind of cool how this is still a fairly thin(ish) jacket, not bulky like the sheep can sometimes be.

A semi cotton lineing? Not sure what you mean by that, but you're saying that it's not a shearling jacket as we know them, typically? Have you seen the lineing, in some particular scene of the movie or perhaps on display? Or are you of this opinion because it looks too thin ... because I have seen some very thin sheering (traditionally lined) before. I just assumed the wool had been shaved down fairly close. Interesting.

sleeves and body and apear to be cotton lined (from shots in the film, ive watched this film a lot,in the same way that Indy nuts watch Raiders)

the jacket has none of the usual bu;k you see with a B3 or Irving,Cooper wears the jacket tied up with the semi detached belt and never zipped up

ill try and get some grabs happening

That's one cool jacket, especially worn the way you described (tied up with the belt and not zipped). I wonder if the book went into much description of the character's jacket, got any idea? Hell... something must be wrong with me, I even dig the "seniorita's" grey blanket sarape' !!

That jacket puts me very much in mind of the one Jude Law wore as Sky Captain:

I wonder if Cooper's jacket was a design inspiration at all? If memory serves, Law's was a custom design by Stella Macartney, clearly influenced by Irvins and B3s (Sky Captain was English, but had flown with the American Volunteers in China) but distinctly different from both. Great looking jacket, IMO.
