Fuzzy burner: save your Feds from fuzziness

I had a beat old Federation in grey that had become saggy, pilled and fuzzy. In looking into the Camptown sale I popped into COW and read about a method of relieving one's hat of fuzzies and tried it out. It worked!

You spray a bit of rubbing alcohol onto the hat. You apply a match. You let the alcohol burn off (and help the flame go out if it gets a little too enthusiastic). And voila... a smooth hat, no fuzzies and clean looking for the first time in years. It's stiffened up considerably too, so I've been able to fix the brim-sag.

Now I'm not trying this on anything but my beaters, but if anyone else wants to, or wants to comment, I'd like to hear about it.

PS: Unfortuantely I don't have a camera where I am, or I'd have documented this little endeavour - I just really didn't think it would work... next time I'll document.

I'm always on the outlook for new tricks. I do have to say, however, that sandpaper is a little more controllable. But thanks for the fascinating tip.

They make...

...special razors for taking pills and fuzz off of things like sweaters.

The burn off technique sounds like what GIs used to do to shoes and boots to get the rough stuff off and prepare them to be shined.

Sandpaper gets pills but causes fuzzies.
