Just thought that I would add my two cents. I live in northern Europe where the warmest temperature is about 90 to 95F. I was visiting family in Texas and brought along a silver belly 30x Stetson. The toughest temperatures were around 110F in San Antonio. The fur felt worked really well. I am going to try a straw, but to be honest the fur felt worked so well I would not hesitate to use it again. That said the hat does get some character from all the use.

110 degrees in a 30X Stetson, and you didn't overheat?? You're one tough customer. I can't even walk my dog for a few miles wearing a well-ventilated straw without sweat rolling down my face, and it's not all that humid where i live, AND I'm talking 80 degrees or so, max. Oh, and I'm 6'3", 198 lbs., and in shape.

Maybe the key is a low activity level while making shade?

I know it's a light colored hat, almost white, but I've been wearing my felt Stetson Open Road. It's the modern version. I'm still adjusting the sweatband to fit more closely, so I'll have to wear it more often. Despite going out with it in 80 or more degree weather, it's not bad. I have to pull the brim down for sun protection though.

Ihave to keep my head cool. I work in a 100 degree temps all day at work and a fur felt just makes me sweat. Beside I value my fur felt hats and spend a lot of time keeping them in good shape. I have a few beaters but staw hats are for me in the summer. I enjoy the difference of the straw Panama's and Milan's that I have.

I wear fur felt in all weather - we had 102 digrees in London in 2006 and I wore my Akubra all the time. They really mold to your head in that temp. JUst don't leave your hat in the car or direct sunlight unless you're wearing it - it'll shrink.

That would be like wearing an oven on your head down here, We have now had 32 days of over 100 degree temps, and mid week is forecast to be 103-106.

My non ventilated straws are too warm, whatever I wear needs to be ventilated,

The whole country has been at 100 degree temps for the last several weeks. It is as hot here, too. I still wear fur felt. I am not a fan of straws (tho I have 2 of them and wear them once in a while).

Maybe I've just never had a good straw hat. They seem scratchy, and the poly ones and poly-coated ones seem heavy. I'm in Georgia, and I can wear a vented, unlined felt hat outside. i can't work in it such as yard work, but I can walk around in it. For working, I wear a well-used Tilley, which I douse regularly with cool water, and then machine wash it when I'm done.

I'm in LA currently, my Cervo's doing fine in the heat, even though it's lined. Someone I was walking with had trouble with the sun in their eyes; not a problem for this head. -Brandon

Hi

I've spent all of July back and forth between my home (Wichita) and my parents home (Central Illinois), 105 degrees F and 25% humidity and 95 plus degrees F with 45% humidity respectively. I just received a bone bunny felt Roughrider (5.75 inch crown 3 inch brim) hat from Major Moore (Buckaroo Hatters). I had the Major leave out the liner, and it's no hotter than my Sun Body hats, and it's a bit more comfortable. This is a cowboy weight hat too.

Hi

I have three of these:
http://www.sunbody.com/

I let one of them dry out and now it's trash, but I soak the other two at least once a month in the summer. You have to wear them dry, or the shrink a little. My local hatter did the shaping of mine. I have one fedora and one more western styled hat. Both have custom ribbon jobs, so my total cost was about $70 a piece.

Mike,

I lucked into one of the Sunbody fedoras that Wichita Hat Works had a special deal on. They had a sort of carmel color brim binding and a matching narrow ribbon.
I replaced the ribbon with a wider tan Petersham and have enjoyed shaping the hat a couple different ways.
I also have a palm straw I've worn for at least 15 years.
They are great and you just can't hurt them.

For me fur felt is just too hot in the 100F days we're having right now. But more importantly for me I just don't want to get sweat stains on my good fur felt hats. And in this heat that's exactly what would happen.
