Bought a new open crown Stetson Stetsonian - 7 5/8 Mink
from JJ Hat Center last week, but it’s too big.
Putting it up in EBay.

You got lucky...JJ's list said they were out of the larger sizes.......I would have loved to snag another at those prices.....but yes...your shipping is harsh!!!! Fedex can ship those for less than $20........
PS You may consider posting an actual image of the hat. People like to see exactly what they are buying.....not stock images......

I think the shipping may be eBay's "calculation" based on the user's input of box size and weight. The calculation seems to run $10 or more than "street rates" and eBay then sells you the shipping label for the lower costs, you profit on the shipping and eBay hits you for 10% of the higher shipping for their cut. Not sure exactly how to get around it. I recently sold a hat and used a flat-rate from eBay, but it ended up being less than the actual cost. It might be best to determine your shipping costs from the carriers, put that average value in your starting price and select free shipping on eBay. Or sell it here on the Lounge and determine the shipping on a case by case basis.

Nice hat BTW! Very tempting as I think that size would work for me.

Maybe the seller is figuring on a double box to protect the original box even though in this case it's not vintage. I'm always willing to pay for a double box to protect a nice original vintage box & hat.

It costs $25.00 for the Garland outlet to double-box a hat and send it to me in Ohio. So I don't see it too far out of line. On more than one occasion, I've told the seller to keep the box and reduce shipping. How many yellow/black octagonal Dobbs boxes does a guy need, anyway?

I don't subscribe to the "they're all just objects" philosophy. If something has value as being vintage then it has a historical life of its own & should stay together. If it has no vintage value to me then I wouldn't be interested anyway. It's only a few bucks more that I can earn back next wk. I'll always vote to keep them together.

If it's the right box, yes, I want to keep them together. That's a nice plus-up to getting your vintage hat, especially if it's a dedicated box, like a Flagship, or an odd brand, like Alexander. But a Knox in one of those Dobbs hexagons? Nah, I can't go to an antique mall without tripping over a pile of those things at $10-15. I'll normally take a Stetson in a Stetson box, but those brown and red things that are ubiquitous? I can take it or leave it. There is no guarantee that the box is original to the hat most of the time, IMHO. I don't know how many times I've received a hat in a box that is clearly marked for another size and model.

I don't disagree with anything you said. Those are all evaluations & decisions made at time of purchase. One can have 500 objects they call a collection & not have a thing. If a rare & pristine 50+ yr old vintage hat comes my way with its original box, far be it from me to throw the box away to save a few bucks.

Old boxes are often a great source of information such as this John B. Stetson box which belonged to Moon, with the Keith Bros & Co label. From previous documentation it has been established that Keith Bros & Co wasn't formed under that name until 1887, & was still in existence at a different address from the original in 1903. Too bad the label does not have the address to help pin down the date of the move & age of the box. And it leaves us to wonder if Keith Bros & Co sourced something from or also sold John B. Stetson? And what of a model or style named "Beach"?

I often request USPS Retail Ground as it’s cheap. Sometimes it takes a month to get it, but it’s cheap.

if the original box is in good shape and something interesting I’ll want the box, but I’m usually not particular based on what I usually see in auctions. I’ve thrown away more than a few vintage boxes because they don’t stack as well as new boxes.
