I've used plastic boning which can be found in any fabric store's notions section. It usually comes covered in fabric. As for real bones, which was used a long time ago for corsets and such, I have not seen those around. But hopefully the more experienced sewers here at the lounge could help you out more.

Farthingales ships very fast & they have excellent customer service. I order from them all the time.

ditto what Vanessa says. There's no corsetry stores in SD. Farthingales is the closest for steel bones, I believe. Just make sure you get the Los Angeles one, there's one in Canada, too.
