French Hats and makers.

My velour Fléchet arrived. The felt is gorgeous! The hand is incredible and the hat is in very nice, but used, condition. It can be dry crease with two fingers to any shape you want and it molds like a dream. The crown is just over 5 1/2 inches open. The milk chocolate color is a favorite and I wish so much it was my size.

Now THAT hat has a LOT going for it.....really cool. Now why cannot we find one (or two, one for each of us) in our sizes?;)

It arrived in a bag within a box. I put my hand in the bag and felt the felt and secretly hoped it would somehow fit me. I love this hat, but since it’s a 7 1/8 I’ll be putting it up for sale.

Fantastic looking hat, Brent. Wonderful felt, shape and ribbon treatment. Too bad it isn't your size (or mine).

Hey all!
This hat had been in my watch list for a while. Threw out an offer after seeing the beautiful homburg that Max scored recently. Bought it last Friday, and it arrived Tuesday, right in the midst of a four day power shutoff. It was a well neded boost to my morale.

Motsch Fils branded hat in a lovely shade of olive green. In sun and shade.

The inside and stuff. Wish it still had the liner.

The last pic, the ripped size tag, is attached to the inside of the front of the sweatband.
Here's a few pics with a quick center dent.

The open crown is 5", and the overwelt brim wants to be 2 1/4" but falls short by about a sixteenth or so. The dense felt is very nice and luxurious feeling, as I would expect from anything bearing the Motsch Fils stamp. It's a medium weight at 104g. 1" ribbon matching the felt color.
My best guess as to it's age would be the early sixties, going by dimensions and the construction and finishing. Any opinions confirming or refuting this are welcome.

Very nice catch, John. There don't seem to be many out there, so lucky to get one. I like the shape and proportions.

Thanks Stefan!
These Motsch branded hats are pretty rare. I just wish it had a maker's name in it like my other one.
Now that raises the question...did they make some of their own hats in house or were they all made for them?

We can only find out if we manage to track down more of their hats. Likely they did at one point make their own and later outsourced. Berteil did the same.

John is a question I asked myself.
As far as I could see, Motsch branded, my answer is no, I don't think they produced hats on their own for the last thirty or forty years. They are supplied by the most varied European producers, but being one of the most prestigious boutiques in Paris, they have, in the past, made custom-made hats, it is not clear whether with hatters in their own atelier or with external manufacturing. However the hats with the Motsch brand are top quality European hats. This in particular seems to be a production of central Europe. I really like the color.
If I know more news I'll write to you.
The Motsch boutique is currently owned by Hermes.

I picked this fine, short velour from a while back. It's a nice dark brown and very soft to the touch. According to the gentleman I bought it from, the Flechet belonged to his grandfather born in 1898. I'm thinking 40s?
