French Hats and makers.

Chapeau Tardy custom hatter from La Maison Francaise at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The building was constructed in 1934. I've walked by here many times oblivious to it's history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Maison_Francaise_(Rockefeller_Center). This hat is of very high quality. Navy blue felt "selected beaver twenty five". The ribbon is an interesting choice, however it's a fine hat.

WOW......love that color and the ribbon indeed unique but looks very well with that dark felt! Feel free to let me know when you find one of these awsome French hats in my pumpkin head size!;)

Sools de Luxe fedora in sand/grey. Very hard to make out the exact colour. Again no label inside the hat. This hat is a very early one, probably thirties. Brim with overwelt edge with four rows of stitching sits at 6,5cm and the very tall crown is creased now with the (deep) pinch at 11,5cm (to match their advertising poster). Wide ribbon on this one. Unlined with just a cloth patch inside the crown. Very soft hat with a lovely hand to the felt. Daniele thinks that either Mossant or Fléchet could be the maker. As Gérard Sools was a high end retailer it would have been the makers' top of the line.

No tags to ascertain the manufacturer of this hat, but the quality and feel of the lush longhair felt suggests it might have come from the velour production in Austria/Germany/Czechoslovakia. The liner with simple credit "BHV Paris" must tie it to Le Grand Bazar de l'Hôtel-de-Ville. Thinking back to my room of hats, those that were sold from a store still open today could be counted on one hand. Maybe half a hand...

A thank you to Daniele for the opportunity to own this wonderful chapeau.

Excellent! Wouldn't have made the connection with the Grand bazar de L'Hotel de Ville, but makes perfect sense.

Wow guys!! I have really enjoyed seeing and reading about these amazing hats in this thread over the last few months. Too many to single out. Just know that I express my greatest thanks for the opportunity to see so many hats that one rarely gets to see. Thanks guys, Dennis

Looks like a nice one, Brent. Very difficult to tell with these Fléchets; the quality can be all over the place.

I’ve had the good and the bad myself. I’ve learned that if it’s made in the good old US of A to run as fast as I can. At least the US made hats seem to be consistently low quality...I guess that’s something. ;)

My velour Fléchet arrived. The felt is gorgeous! The hand is incredible and the hat is in very nice, but used, condition. It can be dry crease with two fingers to any shape you want and it molds like a dream. The crown is just over 5 1/2 inches open. The milk chocolate color is a favorite and I wish so much it was my size.
