Germans were held in 34 camps in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Iowa, with the main camp being at Algona, Iowa. They were model prisoners, enough to be sent out as farmhands to area families who had members in the service.

Did you know there was a german PWs camp in the field where pickets charge happened in gettysburg, PA and also on in south mountain ,PA?

I did my graduate thesis on the German POW camp at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. One of my primary sources was a diary kept by one of the prisoners - and it had already been translated to English by the time I got around to it. Fascinating stuff.
