Rummaging through a bin of old photos, much of which was snapshots from the 70s and 80s, I found some really old negatives. I selected 5 I liked, paid my $2 and change and brought them home to scan.

Most of these I think are from the teens.





This last one was a much smaller negative, but still larger than 35mm. Judging mainly by the cars in the background I'd guess it to be 1930s, and knowing that the skating rink didn't open in Rockefeller Center until 1936, I guess it must be the last half of the 1930s.


These are just raw scans I haven't done anything to clean them up yet, or even balanced the exposure curve. I was just so excited I wanted to share. I'm quite happy with the condition. The worst condition, the women in the canoe, is also my favorite.

Nice find! I like the canoe one best also.

I collect glass slides for the old Magic Lantern projector from around the turn of the century. Educational slides that were used in schools are still quite common but I basically collect 5 subject matters. I have no way to scan them but I frequently look at them on a light table thru a loop & without. I have thought about trying to photograph them from the light table with 35mm transparency film but never have.

Saw these photos in a flea market in Webb City, MO. I left them there, but took some snaps. Love the workwear in the first set and the variety of hat bashes in the last.

I like this one. You can imagine Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in one of their films, watching the skaters; or fictional detectives Ellery Queen, or Archie Goodwin on an errand for Nero Wolfe, taking a break in Rockefeller Center prior to the war. . . .

Absolutely! I worked for a time at the Waldorf and would often take my breaks over at Rockefeller Center. Every time I've ever walked through there I've gotten the feeling that I was in a Hitchcock film. It has to be one of the most cosmopolitan sites on the planet. I was having lunch with a really cute girl one day at the restaurant by the rink when she spotted Woody Allan and Diane Keaton at the next table. She was suitably impressed with my good taste and sophistication for a couple of days.

My Mom found this in a box of "stuff" they had bought at an auction near Jefferson City, Missouri about 20 years ago. Not sure of the location of the pool hall or the year the photo was taken. There are calendars on the wall, but I can't make them out (one of the businesses is Osborn & Jorgenson Insurance). There is a "Volunteer for the United States Army" poster and a sign that reads "If You Can't Hit The Cuspidor Go Out Side to SPIT".
