Forbidden items in my home...

I know Pits have a bad rep, and I won't have one because of it. Every Pit I've ever known, and a few of my friends have them, are super sweet, loving dogs. I just always am on my toes around them, because of what the breed is known for.

^ Realizing the irony of that post... Since I'm at mom's, smoking in my pajamas since I only have time to surf after everyone's in bed! They smoke in the house here all the time, I only do it at night and only in one room of the house at home (my office, I can close it off). I have been chasing mom and my aunt around since I got here, emptying the ashtrays...

It would be after you move, I swore I'd never come back to Ohio. Have you figured out where you're off to yet?

Just have to comment: there are no dog breeds that are "inherently dangerous". That is a complete myth. There are dog breeds that are usually kept by dangerous (or idiotic) people and then become dangerous, but it's not inherent in the breed. There are different breeds for different activities, hunting, herding, etc, but no "killer dogs".

I've always been somewhat bemused by the stories I hear, to be honest. I try to be as polite as possible to people of other faith communities, and I've never found more than a polite "no, thank-you" necessary with a Witness at the door. I was once accosted in a public park by a rather rude lady who contemptuously dismissed my opinion with "clearly you have not thought it through properly" because I happened to disagree with her. I politely ended the conversation there. Rude woman, but by no means typical of the JWs in my experience. I actually feel that they get a bit of a bad rap, to be honest, in that respect.

Sorry I have to disagree. While I don't doubt that maltreatment of animals by owners contributes to aggression, some breeds are predisposed to aggressive behavior. As I said before several breeds of dogs are restricted or banned in Australia & I understand that the UK has similar laws.

We have a lab - rottweiller cross. We got him from a dog sanctuary about three years ago. Despite hundreds of pounds spent on experienced dog trainers and sticking to all the things we have been told to do - he is insanely aggressive towards everything apart from the three of us- and it was a while before he stopped biting us! His aggression does seem to be deep rooted!

What evidence is there for this, if you don't mind me asking?
There are several breeds banned in Germany (not sure about the UK), but I know that it has nothing to do with anyone proving that they are more aggressive than other breeds. I haven't seen a single study which was able to support that idea. The decision was made after wrongly socialised (ie made-aggressive) dogs attacked children and a public debate ensured about some segments of society using certain breeds as weapons. Almost any dog can be made aggressive, and in fact most bites occur from breeds that nobody would consider "dangerous", ie terriers and such. The only thing pit bulls and similar breeds abused for dog fights have against them is that they don't release their bite once they do, and that they go for the throat. Cocks can be made aggressive and fight to the death, but that doesn't mean they are generally more dangerous than other birds.

DJD, I don't doubt that that may be the case, but since he is a rescue dog and you don't know how he was trained or treated when very young, it may again be lack of socialisation rather than the breed. Our dog is a rescue and has terrible recall. We have had countless trainers, but nothing worked well. However, that can't be put down to the breed but to the individual dog. Both breeds in him are usually asy to train and very willing. I have known quite a few Rottweilers who were/are big softies and amazing family dogs.

@drappa - you're probably right. I just wonder if there's a predisposition for a greater proportion of aggressive animals in certain breeds? The other big problem is I suppose how damn strong those breeds are - which coupled with agression makes for a bigger problem. When my dog goes he really goes - I'm a big chap and if he catches me unawares he can pull me off my feet

I've raised several of the so called "aggressive breeds" (pitbull, doberman, rottweiler). All of them absolute sweethearts. Only dog I've ever been around that was just super aggressive and would actually bite anyone was my mothers 3lb pomeranian.

I think there's certain characteristics one has to look out for, and triggers (ie. hounds are triggered by sight and see a rabbit and are gone), so it's probably possible that there is a greater percentage of certain breeds that misbehave because they are mishandled. People just seem to think a dog is a dog is a pet, and not that different breeds and within that different individuals have different needs. Just like with people, it bothers me that certain animals get a bad rep if a few individuals have misbehaved/shown aggression, when the majority haven't.
