The Rough Wear B-6, is made from an incredible broken grain, veg tanned, hand dyed sheepskin, with a fleece depth of 1/4 inch. In the late 30s/early 40s the skins used for shearling flight jackets were veg-tanned and hand-dyed which produced a mottled, patchy appearance. They were a lighter shade than those produced later in the war having a distinct reddish hue (often referred to by the collecting fraternity as 'Redskins'). This material is now exclusively reproduced by us to emulate the original skins from WWII. The veg-tanning process is very time consuming and costly, but it produces a hide that looks and handles just like the original. We then hand-dye the skins, one by one just as they would have been all those years ago; the dye is swashed on with a sheepskin pad which produces the desired affect. Our Rough Wear® Sheepskin jackets offer the customer a product of extreme speciality; original 'Redskin' jackets are much sought after within the flight jacket collecting fraternity because of their attractive vintage appeal.
