You suspect correctly, Baron. A very dark, deep reddish-purple that catches the eye and the breath in one sweet bloom.

OK. SO, on a teleological level, you are arguing that black is either a mix of colors or the absence of all color, which is true. And we must define what is nature; would the inky darkness of space be cosidered nature, which is quite black and quite reflective of (pun intended) the absence of all color? But, on a coversational level, there is an agreed upon definition as to what is black is, which is also demonstrated in nature; in a split of obsidian, the shell of a scorpion, the tar of LeBrea.

Personally, I have never seen these flowers, but I would love to. I have heard of a black orchid. I haven't seen one of those either.

Pretty, but the ones I get are darker than that. Or at least they are at the bud stage, which is the point where I like to wear them.

2 of my favourites.

A random widlflower from my garden. It is a very light violet shade. Flash ruined resolutioin, i'm afraid but you can see the shape and size ...

And a young dandelion flower (the older ones, though just as pretty, have too large diameter for my lapel). Problem is you usually can't get them this open until at least mid-day. And they wilt very fast without a buttonhole vase.

My problem with commercial flowers for the buttonhole is that they look too perfect. Wildflowers always have some imperfections, adding a slight insouciance to something so inherently studied.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes dandelions. They seem to be the scourge of our neighborhood - everyone always trying to wipe them out and have nice, trim, green-only lawns.

The Baroness is a wildlife rehabilitator, so we actively cultivate dandelions for when we have baby rabbits to raise ... like now. Result: plenty of young dandelion flowers for moi ... stolen from the mouths of hungry rabbits.

Dropped into the florist today, and they'd sold out. I'm due to go out next weekend and will need a buttonhole then, so will try to grab a picture of what I end up with.
