The B-17 received all the glory, especially in the movies. It was an older 1930's design but "prettier". The B-24 was a lumbering ugly duck by comparison. Crews called them "flying coffins" because they were harder to get out. One Vet that I spoke with told me when his ship was hit over Germany he bailed out through the wheel well ! My father's brother was killed in one.

Apparently the B24's were more fragile when shot at and they had a tendency to burn easily or break in two. They were also dangerous on landing. In contrast the B17's were far more robust, could take a lot of punishment and were easier to fly.

Back seat in a P-51 and/or a Spitfire is top of my Bucket List...
At Duxford a short while back, got to watch 'Sally B' and some P-51s parade around the sky. Also 12 Spitfires and 5 Hurricanes. (day before the P-51 crash landed)...
Then at RIAT yesterday, saw a Lancaster escorted by some Spits and Hurricans AND old Sally B and her escort again. What a treat.

Excellent thread idea Nick! Deeply envious of your ride there, and yes, I would also be pretty emotional about the guys (and a few gals) who rode in those planes, not knowing if they would get to ride back home.
