Flight jacket repair?

no, this posting is not a message to a certain other member of the fedLounge...fftopic: (yes, i know)

it is a response to DB...yes, if you can sew those holes shut, rather than replacing cuffs or ribbing, i'd do it...

i talked with dave, the leather master (no, really, that's his title down there) at Gibson Barnes, and he did point out there is a lifespan to changing cuffs and such...each time new cuffs or ribbing are added, they do not (at least as he explained it) go through the original holes...and i'm sure a local tailor would never take the time to do that...they start new holes...this means after 3 or so cuff changes, your leather will be like swiss cheese and you would need to shorten the arms to put more cuffs or a new ribbing on the coat

so i'd much rather have some moth holes sewn up and accept the wear (we all love wear in these jackets, it's what's great about them) and save the cuff changes for when you really have to do them

as for dave at G and B, what an incredibly nice and knowledgable guy...unfortunately his company no longer does repairs on non GB ware...understandably so since they don't wish to take the liability of doing something to a priceless, or other manufacturer's jacket, that upsets an owner...

again, i'd recommend sending your jacket to aero, or elc...but aero especially if it's an aero as you say...and, if it is an aero, it's a jacket certainly worth the money and time to have it done right...don't roll the dice and go to a local tailor...i respect other fedLounger's opinion on this matter, but my own experience with an expert tailor was that this kind of repair needs true expertise in jacket construction...and even the tailor himself told me that before doing the work, which told me something as well
