Been scouring the net looking for leads as to what this is. This patch is huge, about 6 inches in diameter and has a sewn red felt backing. I purchased it a little while ago not knowing if it was original or not. I assumed it wasn't so I paid accordingly. Any help would be appreciated.

NMCB-8???

Naval Mobile Construction Batallion - 8

Could be an early unit patch....or a theater patch done up in the field by a member of that unit.

Patch Id

Hello your patch is a WW2 USN emblem for VB-8 or known as "Bombing 8" it is an Unofficial design but was used by the unit,I believe they flew SBD's or Helldivers. Hope this helps you!

the bomBs and the BeeS

hi siGGy...

a question...if someone wanted that, but wanted a perhaps better rendition of (that does look a bit amateurish, and am not discussing it's historical value), do you have source materials of the best version of that bombing bee that were made, and could you then make someone one that has a better look to it?

of course i have to ask, do you happen to have any other pix of this patch, and if so, are you able to put one on the forum here?

thanks

p.s. how the hEck did you know where this patch came from if senicko, mr. historical a-2, did not? what are your reference sources?

JJ,

I'm thinking this is an original. Just looking at the leather and the backing. I am going to put it under a black light, at least to see if the thread keeping the backing is original.

Thanks Siggy for the ID..lol

I had a new repro patch of this design some years ago that I made a color copy of and sold the patch to a collector,it is a Disney design,i don't recall who I got it from but it was at a militaria show and the person told me the info on it, yes i could make you a nice leather patche with MUCH better details.

No doubt, but originals did NOT look have the high quality that you see on reproductions. Fact, for the most part they were painted with whatever was available on whatever was available and most of the time in haste. So to make an accurate reproduction you need to do a little research on the originals that were worn on the jackets, not the Photoshopped images of today. ;)

reaL deaL kinda stuff

i agree...and must add, since i've seen siggy's stuff, that such is exactly what he does...though he makes his leather patches as if whatever serviceman in the field was making it, had skill

i have become acquainted with collectors who frame siggy's leather patches, with war memorabilia, and signed by the actual personnel from ww2 who have worn them...they are indeed accurate renditions, down to the materials and manner of application of those materials onto the leather...

was very impressed with what i saw
