Flat Iron Curls

This past weekend, I chopped all my hair off (almost 16 inches!), leaving me with a little chin lenght bob and some side bangs. Once upon a time, with my mile long hair, i tried to curl with my flat iron and failed. The curls fell flat and turned out more like "oops i forgot to blow dry" than "look, curls!" but with the fresh cut and the non-length - seriously, these curls are fantastic. they're finger soft, seperate but still defined... better than anything ie ver got from pincurls because they lack that frizz that can sometimes occur and dont require as much product.

You curled your hair with a flat iron? The thingie that is supposed to straighten your hair? I am confused how you would do that.

Grats on the plunge! Did you donate your hair to locks of love?

I use a narrow flat iron to curl the ends of my hair. My hair has a lot of natural curl, so I straighten the bangs, and then use the flatiron to flip my ends up or under, depending on my mood. Sometimes I'll use it to even create some small waves. It actually works amazingly well, if you know how to do it. I've never done full-on curls with it though, I usually use my curling iron for that. I want to see pictures!

Yes, apparently it can be done to emulate fingerwaves, but I haven't actually seen that yet. My hairstylist was supposed to do a video demonstrating this technique for a product company she works for, but it seems to have fallen through.

I know there are several videos on youtube demonstrating the technique.

When I got my hair done for my wedding she did my whole head with a flat iron. I was a bit freaked out at first, because when we did the "practice," I curled it ahead of time with hot rollers. Anyway, at the time my hair was about to the middle of my back. She took very small sections, about 1-2 inches and curled them with the flat iron. I was amazed. I had these beautiful spiral curls. I actually wore it in an updo, so I don't have any pictures, but it was really pretty. And they lasted too. When I took it down it was still real curly.

Yep, if you can get the hang of it you get great curls. They last a bit longer because you get heat evely throughout the strand, whereas winding it on a regular iron fries the ends and leaves the hair near the scalp less curly.

There are different ways to do it.. all in the wrist action, or actually taking a strand and pretending you're using curling ribbon and a pair of scissors for a gift. Run the flat iron down the strand the same way and "ribbon" the hair.

That tutorial is not at all how i did it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been a bit busy over the past few days but, this weekend, i'll give it a shot again and try to take some pictures. Be warned, however, my hair is extremely short right now (at my chin) and the curls take it up even higher, so it's sort of a goofy length, but it does work.

When I googled for tutorials, I came up with this one - its not the best but it does give you the general idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffu1BmJGATQ You grab a very small section and grip near the scalp, careful to hold it level so you dont get a goofy bump. Then you twist the iron with your wrist, wrapping your hair around it once. Squeeze tightly then pull down rather strongly until you run out of hair to pull through. It's so much easier than anything i've tried before.
