Here is a useful site for ordering traditional fishermen's sweaters from Cornwall. I have a couple of them and am thinking of ordering another as they are very warm and comfortable as well as very traditional woollies.

Looks good to me, good timing too - I rooted out my jumpers recently to discover moth caterpillars have been lunching on them over the summer. Gits!

Especially since I've spent hours plodding round Manchester trying to find something similar to no avail.

You seem a bit of a jumper enthusiast - if you can recommend some nice cardis too???

I agree that they don't have the allure of commando sweaters or Guernseys, for instance. However they are rugged, durable and traditional, which are three big 'plusses'.

Just placed an order with Sou'west chunkies, most impressed, they make the sweater, send it to you then if all is fine they charge you. I have never encountered a company before that will make and deliver a garment with no money changing hands first.

That's impressive! Quite interested in the outcome and what the garment is like when it arrives, because those prices are excellent.

I have developed an interest in traditional knitting - specifically replicating the designs of Scottish and North-east England traditional fisherman's ganseys knitted on five needles in five-ply boiled wool. Each fishing village had its own design, sometimes unique to individual families and passed down through the generations until quite recently. We are fortunate that a few researchers recorded their patterns and wrote them down before they died out. There are a few publications in the area and there is at least one supplier of the correct wool and needles.

This is fascinating. I had never ever heard of this. I love, love, love Scotland. Found our family tartan when I went. Amazing info. Hope you are able to preserve this or do your part.

Very similar patterns to the Aran sweaters popular in Ireland for however many generations. My grandmother always said that drowned fishermen were often identified by the family knit when their bodies eventually washed ashore.

Made in Britain from British wool, classic design, no logos, no "super-fine brushed Merino wool" nonsense, what's not to like? Maybe department stores are better in Australia, but over here it's all pap!
