Yeah, I've seen that tutorial too. While it does a good job of demystifying the process, and while I appreciate that person's effort in making it and his generosity in passing along what he learned, I can't say I'm a big fan of the end result. See how much pucker there is in the ribbon, right where it meets the front edge of the bow? It's something the large majority of people would pay no never-mind, but we're hat nuts, and we notice such things.

If I understand you correctly, you started at the back end of the ribbon and then worked your way around the crown, tacking the ribbon down as you went.

I tack down the ribbon at its ends -- two stitches at the front (high and low on the ribbon) and then two at the back, doing the top rear stitch last. All four of these stitches will be covered by the bow. As I mentioned earlier, I often use a pin to hold the ribbon taut so that I have two free hands for making that top rear stitch. Then I attach the bow. And then I put in two or three or four itty-bitty stitches along the bandline.

The stitches holding the bow down are generally invisible, as the needle (usually) doesn't penetrate the outer fold of ribbon. And the stitches along the bandline are quite inconspicuous, seeing how they are made with a single pass of the thread, right at the ribbon's edge, and that I'm careful to use a thread very close in color to the ribbon. (I'm a regular at the local fabric store.)

I don't know that this is the best way to do it, necessarily, but it works well enough.
I do mine the exact same way Tony. One exception, I tack front bottom 1st, then I pull the ribbon around the hat making it taught, and stitch the bottom back. I leave the top front and top back for last, only because sometimes because of tapering on the crown, it won't lay flat all around.

I then stitch the top front, pulling it down a tad. Then I do the same thing on the back, pulling it taught (down), making sure it lays flat all around. Even if it looks a bit funny, puckered a little sometimes, like you said, the Bow covers it. I don't bother tacking it anywhere else, I've been lucky doing it this way so far. I finish by dabbing cold water on it all around and let it dry. It will them become even tighter that way. A little trick our friend JT taught me.

I'm glad you mentioned about the Brim Trim thread and his outcome being all puckered. :eusa_doh: I just hope when I try this, that won't be my results....my only fear right now. [huh]

a suggestion for the wide-ribbon bow

my Bond Executive has a 2" wide ribbon on it, but the bow isn't a double bow, which helps keep it from looking so huge. The double bow adds a lot of puff and size, while the single bow sits pretty flat against the hat.

Good Luck!

TonyB- That's an awesome ribbon job! Very cool, very unique!

rebashed & switched out ribbon

I got bored so I decided to redo this hat to something I would actually wear more often .. I stripped it completely this time and reattached the sweatband with a lighter color thread that matched the new ribbon that I made for it

I like it much better .. what do you guys think?

Here is my attempt at a new ribbon, on this old Larchmont I won on Ebay last year...the sweat was falling apart a little and the ribbon was fraying... I just sewed the sweat back on the loose threads part and the ribbon was black...so I tried to do a little touch with the green ribbon and added a dark brown in the bow to contrast the hat a la Art Fawcett...

I just followed the one thread on how to do it...but I think I should have spread the bow a little taller on the ends..it looks to even to me..

Thanks for the compliment and the word on the link to all the albums..I fixed it by nameing the album...

the ribbon is a 2 inch grosgrain...the color insert to tie the bow is actually a chocolate brown.

Your ribbon looks great...i was trying to do my ends like that and it ended up being straight..

Larry
