Wow! That's a beaut! Awesome character and grain already! Who was the maker, Aero or Simmons Bilt? How much does it weigh? The fit LOOKS perfect, how does it feel? Is the bison flexible and comfortable? - even though its stiff enough to stand up on its own! Does it have the hidden knit cuffs? And, finally, what is it lined with?

Oh... by the way... welcome to the Lounge, and congratulations on a beautiful first custom jacket. I hope the two of you live a long happy life together. :D

What a beautiful jacket!

I really must stop visiting this forum. When I look in my closet, I think "That's enough" until I come here and see a jacket like this and think "oh, that's nice, maybe one more."

Thanks. It is Simmons Bilt. I don't have a scale so no idea of the weight, but it is substantial. I'll check the shipping documents to see if there is a weight listed.

The bison is soft and flexible in and of itself but still needs breaking in. But it is comfortable

Lined in their standard Locharren wool tartan, cotton-lined sleeves with inner knit wool cuffs. Has a single internal chest pocket on the left.

wow on that back yoke! I mean the wild grain on that panel

I chose bison for the grain and am quite please with how it turned out.

The Horween Bison is awesome stuff! Jacket looks awesome and great fit! Is it Havanna brown?

The colour is referred to generically as "brown". I am pleased with the fit given that no test jacket was involved. Measured myself but had it confirmed by my tailor when I met with him prior to ordering. The measurements of their size 44 was perfect in the chest and shoulder dimensions. Needed custom sleeve length as well as front/back length adjustments. I am pleased with the fit. Close fit without being too restrictive. Will be better of course when it breaks in a bit.

Could not ask for more regarding communication and customer service. Very quick responses. Four week turnaround as promised post ordering.

Extra benefit was they had 20% off bison and it was ordered and paid for during the Brexit pound meltdown so a £400 for such a jacket at that prevailing exchange rate is a killer value. Came in at about $675 CDN ($518ish USD)

Maybe that should be the forum's tag line:

I own a jacket made in the black bison, the 20% off were too tempting to turn away from. I have worn it quite a bit so I can answer some questions about it.

It's 3.5 oz and as that heavier than my FQHH jackets (with the exception of my Teamster which probably was made by a horse on some serious roids. Generally, FQHH is 3 oz so expect the jacket to be heavier.

The leather is not as waxy as CLX, actually not waxy at all. In feel, the finish reminds of Vansons comp weight leather. This means the leather is less temperature dependant. Once broken in, it's super soft, softer than my FQHH jackets. However the surface doesn't feel as nice to the hand, Kind of "Hard" due to the finish. Also, it ages very differently. It has crazy beautiful grain but shows no other signs of wear, the slightly shiny finish doesn't wear off at all until now. Nothing for the ones who want the vintage look. Also, if not properly matched, the panels can look a bit weird because the bison grain can differ greatly from super grainy and shiny in finish to much duller and barely any grain. Overall, it's just a different leather for a different taste, I suppose. I love it but I love all my jackets (except for that corrected finish cowhide flying jacket but still I wear this one right now, so..).

Wow, that does look nice. I did see the SB sale some time back.

If I may ask, how much of a hit did you take with duties and taxes to Canada?

Had to shrink these other pics and I'm not sure why some are rotated because they are correctly oriented on my phone

Thanks. That's interesting. I have avoided buying from Europe as I have seen folks being charged over 30% in total.
I see that the bison is still on sale. Now you have got me thinking. :)

Checked the customs form and there is an entry that says "not sold" which might account for that

That Horween Bison is such great stuff. Tremendous heft but definately easy to wear. Looks fantastic man.

I'm looking forward to Fall when i can wear it. I'm impressed by the bison. Gotta give props to Simmons Bilt for doing a killer job.

How long did yours take to break in?

I have a Detroit in CXL Bison is over 2 years old .. break in was very quick TBH and creasing started almost immediately. Because of the surface finish of CXL Bison it looks much more worn than CXL Steer and FQHH and ages much quicker. The only downside of the hide is that the surface can scratch quite easilly and the surface finish wears through but IMHO it just adds to the character ( the leather is struck through - dyed all the way through - so doesn't show brown undertone) . The Detroit has been my dry weather "Bike Jacket" with my T-pro armoured shirt underneath for the last year or so ... very comfy and softens delightfully :)

Wear it hard .... it can take it :)
