In my opinion, no. Still decent jackets for the right price, but not scarce

...just a perspective. I like the idea of discussing values/salability of jackets on this thread. It is a great learning experience for newer collectors to see comments/opinions from the experts concerning the jackets featured and why they are/are not desirable to the cognoscente. It is natural that a discussion/debate will sometimes evolve. I've never seen things get that sidetracked. Such discussions seem to come and go pretty quickly and, for me, add to the value of the thread.

I agree with everything you have said here. We all started here by reading posts from others before eventually joining the Lounge officially. I'm seeing a lot of new members coming in and posting which I think is great. I try to help guide new members whenever possible. Regarding the thread topic and staying on point, it comes down to internet etiquette. Its not my rules and I am in no way staunch about this either way. When I first started conversing on Reddit several years ago, I was quickly and often (sometimes rather rudely so) told to start a new thread if the topic veered. Personally, I never had/have an issue with things extraneous to the thread subject being discussed. But I learned quickly there are those that get quite irritated when the thread topic veers. So I became a little more aware of when something was starting to stray from the thread topic.

That said, I never have a problem simply NOT READING posts that are an ongoing conversation between a few members that I don't have interest in. Its up to the group as a whole to guide the tone of the thread.

I’d argue the thread barely needs to exist at all. Fairly certain we all see the stuff posted here in our own baked in searches. I could be wrong but I’m rarely surprised. Not to say it doesn’t happen on occasion, but it’s exceedingly rare. That could speak to my own obsessive issues though…I’d also never dare post an item here I wanted, they’ve seen it too. Of this I am sure, and they know who they are!

This is quite the hilarious post as @ton312 puts a spotlight on the elephant in the lounge. Lol..... We all know each other's sizes by what we DON'T post......NOT what we DO post. Damn do I love posting those awesome size 36 Finds!!! Lol

You know, you are correct. Even as I myself contributed to this discussion with my own verbose ranty ramble, this is truly a multi faceted topic that could carry its own thread. Someone should start a thread called Vintage vs. Repro - Perspectives and Opinions and then we can all blab about it there. While we do tend veer into OT conversation from time to time in this thread---but this one perhaps is hijacking the Finds and Deals a little too much.

It is an interesting topic --- a sort of self reflection look in the mirror at what each of us gets out of these jackets.

My last comment on this topic is to say I'm with @ton312!!! Let me know where the declining cost Half Belts are hiding!!!

I would think discussions of the jacket value and jacket market fit right into a thread titled finds and deals jacket addition

I can definitely see how this thread would be of less - even little - value to the more experienced buyers/collectors on TFL. As you say, I'm sure such people have their own searches set up to find pieces they are looking for.

But I think it has great value for the less-experienced (like me), or those who only buy occasionally. For such people, this thread might provide a great lead on a purchase.

In terms of discussions of the market and value of items, again I do think such discussions are of more interest and benefit to the newer participants.

What do you mean with 'more modern fit'. Jackets with longer body lengths to accommodate low rise pants? I think I have to agree with you on this one. If that's your thing you'd probably be better off buying a Fine Creek. If you mean fit in general than I'd have to disagree. I found out that vintage patterns are often times superior to modern patterns in terms of comfort and movability.

Vintage doesn't equate fragile of course. I wear my vintage jackets on a night out, to the office, when running errands and I often take one with me on holidays. I never feel like I have to baby them.

To me buying vintage is less risky than buying new. When you're not happy with your custom ordered Himel or Thedi and you decide to move it on, be ready to lose 40% of your investment even though the jacket is brand new. If you move on your vintage jacket even after wearing it for a couple of years, chances are you'll recoup your money (unless you bought above market value of course).

There's vintage and there's vintage. All leather jackets are mass produced & vintage is just a fancy name for any crusty old jacket and there's actually very little value to any as you know nothing about them is unique or special.

So sure, I wouldn't care wearing my crusty old Sears anywhere, which is what I do - but - if I had an original Durable in a mint condition, I wouldn't feel comfortable treating it the same way. Again, it's not a special jacket but the chances of me replacing it are much smaller than replacing I dunno, Sears. . .

But TBH, I'm not even sure why. Vintage leather jackets are just old clothes and are no better or worse than new leather jackets. Clothes exist only on a wearer.
