This jacket was originally listed at BIN $200, but changed to $300, now have an offer of $250. The only Sierra MC jacket I have seen and this one looks to be quite nice, but it is a size 38. Not too long ago I would have bought this jacket at $200 for resale or even $250. Today I am staying away from jackets size 40 and below. I can't wear them and I can't sell them. To me, this jacket is a bargain if you can wear it.

Not sure what you mean by can't sell them? Pretty much the only sizes that sell are 40 and 42. 38 right after that, anything else, bigger or smaller, can sit for months. Most people wear sz. 40 as young people buy these jackets nowadays near exclusively.

I kinda beg to differ.........

From what I see, in the vintage market, there are TONS of smaller sized jackets. 36, 38, 40, even 42 (obviously the numerous Japanese listings are ALL SMALL). But when you see a true vintage size 44 or 46--basically they are modern 42-44. This is especially the case the older the jacket is. As you know, in general, the older they are, the smaller they tend to be for the tagged size. True vintage jackets are listed as "Rare Larger Size" or things like that when they are bigger than the 38-40 range. And they usually get A LOT of attention from buyers.

I am not a big guy (other than my mouth). But I still can't fit into most vintage 42s and couldn't imagine a 40 or smaller. Jackets I CAN fit into that are vintage usually have many interested buyers.

I am not speaking on the market---which you may well be correct on--with younger people buying and hence the smaller sizes being more popular for this reason. Perhaps you are not referring to vintage jackets. What I am saying is that it really seems like the majority of true vintage jackets (which I loosely categorize as 60s or earlier), tend to be in the smaller sizes i.e. vintage size 42 or smaller. So perhaps because there are many in this range, they are slower to sell than the same jacket might be in a larger size.

This may be a poor example, but I think that Monarch that @tmitchell59 just won at auction was almost as valuable for its size as it was for its condition, maker, style etc. It seems like jackets like that come around way more often in smaller sizes.

The obvious saving grace thing with ONLY buying jackets you can wear is that if you can't sell it, AT LEAST you can wear it yourself. If you have jackets too small to wear, you HAVE to sell them or just sit and look at them.

I also think depending on the jacket type, (Vintage vs. Repro vs. New Non Repro) the size may play a bigger role in its desirability. @Monitor may be referring more to non vintage jackets and I do understand that point to a certain extent. But to me, the "larger" sized true vintage stuff seems to garner more attention than the same jacket would in a smaller size. Of course, it could just be my perception because I am focused on these larger sizes that fit me and not on the smaller ones.

Opinions on this topic are probably quite varied.

I have a buddy who wears like a 36 or 38 and he's into vintage bikes. I've sent him dozens of leads over the years on the coolest vintage leather jackets for outrageously low prices because they really small. I always tell him if he was into this hobby, he'd have a lot of cool stuff in his size.

It's interesting to me that the photos in this auction book show the jacket does not have a center seam down the back. All the Bates reproductions that I've ever seen do have a center seam, which for me ruins the look of the jacket. I always thought it was strange, because I couldn't see a center seam on Schwarzenegger in the film, but I wasn't confident that it wasn't there. But it's definitely not there.

The terminator's programming was impeccable. Even ensured it selected a guy with seamless back leather jacket.

I have this exact same Fidelity in a blue. Certainly one of my favorites and one of the few vintage jackets my wife likes. You won’t be disappointed with it. Pretty reasonable price
