That jacket is Steerhide, I have never seen this style in Capeskin.
Thank you, I appreciate the clarification. I was looking at this add you posted and can now see the pocket difference.

I know the liner is replaced and there's a button missing, but otherwise it looks to be in good shape especially for that price. If it fits (which it should) I could basically just wear it, the Cal, and Vanson forever.
That's my all time favorite Californian pattern. It just doesn't get any better than that, new or old. It's top of the heap.

I didn't notice the difference in the pockets. What is interesting about this jacket is the "older" label. I could not find this jacket in the catalog, I was surprised. This is also the model with the low adjustment not a half-belt set up.

There are a lot of variations in these Sponge Bob square pocket jackets, most are Steerhide, I have a Horsehide. Never seen one in Cape.

I thought about buying that jacket, it was cheap. I'm just after different stuff.

I just sold an earlier edition of this jacket on ebay. This one looks to be 1942 or so. The last of this style that the War effectively ended. They tweaked this style through the years, going to a simpler, using different leathers. They are made of fine hides by California Sportswear.

here it is in Washable Calf skin with the fancier back and Talon sunrise zipper c.1938.

Thats the kind of ringing endorsement i needed to feel more confident sbout such an impulsive purchase. Can't wait to get it!

Congratulations! look forward to seeing it worn.

To me, it looks like it's the missing button that was alluded to in the description. I think I can see the cuff in the foreground of the photo. I'm not as fussed about that as a shoulder hole

Looks like a hole in the shoulder to me ☹️

Edit: looking at it again, you could be right about the button cuff. Could be that in the foreground. At first I was convinced it was the collar but looking at the seams it doesn’t make sense to me.

Looks more like a hole where a button should've been on the cuff. You can see the jacket's hem on the background, leading me to believe this picture was taken from the bottom section to show the cuff and, hence, captured the bottom of the jacket (waist hem)

Edited my post a second after I posted it so you must have been quick to reply :)
I think you and @dudewuttheheck are right.
