Finds and Deals - Leather Jacket Edition

I'll blame Stu for this, too. I think I was getting that first LW at the time and figured I'd sell this Vanson to minimize the financial loss. Or something like that... But yeah, selling this one was a mistake of unseen proportions. I've never handled such leather before or since.

Another casualty of your LW experience. Too bad, really. I’m going to PM you a Cal I am looking at. I think it may be too big but it’s one under the Leatherman label I’ve wanted for a long time. Thinking a layering jacket but I am probably deluding myself.

Just keep that exquisite Cal you have!!

Does the Enfield look like mine. I think this was made in 2001.....

what's the ID number? Should be in one of the pockets or on the wind flap (or the FOB if you still got it). Mine is 50400 something. The ones from 2018 are like 78000. They started numbering around 1984, so figure I'm somewhere on the upper side of the middle there, maybe 1998-2002 range. I sent an email to Vanson, but fun project for me to do some detective work.

Can find no ID number. No tag in the handwarmer pockets that are leather lined. None on the wind flap or inside pockets. Just the Vanson brand tag and size 'Made in USA'. That's it. I bought jacket used although it looked brand new. Not even any sleeve creases. Heavy Comp steer.

check inside pocket, the one without the zipper. should be on the leather lip. It's embossed so easy to miss too.

Here's some close ups of the leather. I'm hopping the grain on the biswing flap is a precursor of what's coming. Because if so, I done good. But in any case, like I said. It's really nice, a gooey, aniline feeling.

I found it. Man that is hard to read. Small numbers branded in the leather. Here's what I think it says 45881 A. My Son double checked it and read them off the same.
secret spy stuff :)

Ok cool. So that's another data point. If you think yours was around 2001. Mine is 4000 later. From what I understand, they number the customs different, so hard to put a number to anything conclusively. But if 80000 is new and 46000 is about 20 years old, it's roughly 1800 jackets a year. So mine is probably 2003-2004 give or take.

I guess if you're looking for 90's, you probably need 30-40k range

I really don't know for sure how old my Enfield is. Since I bought it used I was guessing at 2001. I thought that's when the seller said he bought it but not sure now.
gotcha. No worries. I sent email to vanson earlier today. Once they let me know, I'll update you all. Was looking to create a general rule of thumb so we don't have to flood them with emails every time we see one for sale. But it's all good.

Vanson will happily tell you what year the jacket was produced by the serial number.

Anyway, wasn't this jacket sold? And who made it?

Jacket from Hercules company (based in U.K.?), but jackets were made in south east Asia (Thailand?). They got affected really badly by the pandemic and I believed they closed down. There is a Hercules co thread at the merchant section of the forum. The waxy looking russet cowhide like the sample above looks really nice. We got some members here who were able to get something from them before the company shut down.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254800795496

The plot thickens. For "shits and giggles" I " bought it now" last night West Australian time. Went thru' 100% normal.

This morning , three emails from ebay/paypal

Your order was cancelled

Hi *****,

The seller cancelled this order because: Buyer asked to cancel the order.

They sent a refund to your original payment method.

So the question is what gives ? Also this from the seller this morning ??

Thank you for buying the item from us.

But I have to apologize to you.
We have lost your item.
I can't send you the goods.

I've just got a full refund from Paypal to you.
Please forgive me.

Also, if you buy merchandise from me, I will offer you 10% off.

Regards
Tomohiro

In summary , the USD $ are gone from my bank account and have not yet reappeared ?
What can the seller hope to gain from this ?

That’s exactly word for word my experience. I checked my PayPal account and it showed the refund a few hours after my payment to him with the usual PayPal phrase that it might take a day or two to appear on my credit card blah blah. It hadn’t been credited to my card yesterday and isn’t there today but that’s quite usual with refunds so I’m not worried enough to raise a case - yet. It’s a mystery why he did this a second time after being drilled on the ‘lost’ issue after the first time?
He does have a vast list of mainly vintage Schotts and a total of over 22000 items for sale so he may just be a sloppy seller? The jacket hasn’t reappeared on sale.

I don't know if the comp weight is aniline. Schott 100 series is aniline and it only takes a few wears to break in. The vanson is known to take years. That's why i was on the hunt for an older one.

Ah, I see! I may even remember them now, something about it did seem familiar. Thank you for the info. It looks like a great jacket, I'll throw in a bid if it doesn't go too crazy.

I guess these shops are selling through many other platforms like Yahoo Auctions, Buyee.jp, etc. and I suppose he sold the jacket twice and therefore had to inform the second buyer (in this case you) that the item is no longer available. That's just a guess.
